Kanaan Is The Clubhouse Leader For The Coveted 'Fuzzy's Triple Crown,' Gets Ready For Pocono 400 Now

Indy 500 champion Tony Kanaan is the clubhouse leader after the opening leg of the “Fuzzy’s Triple Crown,” according to golf legend and Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka founder Fuzzy Zoeller.

Kanaan, driving the No. 11 Hydroxycut Chevrolet for KV Racing Technology, made a dramatic front straightaway pass for the lead on lap 197 to secure his first Indianapolis 500-Mile Race title and now is in position to have a chance to win $1 million dollars in the coveted “Fuzzy’s Triple Crown.” The Triple Crown is comprised of three major oval races (Indy, Pocono and Fontana) on the 19-race IZOD IndyCar Series schedule.

If a driver can win all three major events in 2013, Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka will award them $1 million. If a driver wins two of the three big races, Fuzzy’s will present a check for $250,000 to the driver.

“Tony did a great job in winning the Indy 500 and he is our clubhouse leader going into the Pocono Race on July 7,” said Zoeller, the 1979 Masters champion and 1984 U.S. Open winner. “Tony can become the second person to win the Triple Crown if he wins at Pocono and Fontana. Not to mention that he can make a good haul by just winning one more.”

Kanaan, who won a 500-mile race back in 1999 at Michigan, knows the chore is large to capture the Indy 500, the Pocono IndyCar 400 on July 7 and the MAVTV 500 on October 19.

“I’m excited, but let’s not get greedy,” said Kanaan on his post Indy press tour. “This series is so competitive that maybe we have a better chance at the $250,000 prize than the $1 million bonus. But as I’m the only one that has a shot, I’ll take it and we’ll try for it.”

Kanaan will take his first laps around the “Tricky Triangle” 2.5-mile oval at Pocono this Tuesday when he and 13 other drivers participate in a testing session.

“I’m the only one with the chance to win the Triple Crown, so there is pressure on our team at Pocono,” Kanaan said. “But I’m looking forward to running the Pocono track. Michael (Andretti) has always said it was a great track to race. So it should be fun on Tuesday for the test.”

Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka unveiled the beautiful “Fuzzy’s Triple Crown” Trophy last month in a press conference at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The gorgeous “Fuzzy’s Triple Crown” Trophy was designed by Jostens, a famous award manufacturer.

The three famed oval races renew the tradition of the popular “Triple Crown” from the 1970s and 1980s IndyCar competition.

“Thanks to Fuzzy’s for bringing back the triple-crown and having Pocono in the mix is very special,” said Rick Mears, an eight-time 500-mile race winner. “Pocono is close to me because it is a great and unique track and it is where I won my first race coming back in 1985 from my feet injuries. All three tracks are completely different and you have getting some many things right to win on each of them. If you can do it, it shows the depth of your team too. It is a great thing to have back in IndyCar racing.”

Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka, created by Zoeller, has been a popular entry into the IZOD IndyCar Series as the Official Vodka of the IZOD IndyCar (Series?) and the primary sponsor for Ed Carpenter Racing. Carpenter, who drives the No 20 Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka Chevrolet-powered car, won a 500-mile race last September at Fontana.

The previous “Triple Crown” included 500-mile races at Indianapolis, Pocono and Ontario, Calif., from 1971- 1980 and from 1981-1989 at Indy, Pocono and Michigan.

Only one driver, Al Unser, has captured all three races in a single season, when the four-time Indy 500 winner drove to victory in the Jim Hall-owned First National City Travelers Checks-sponsored car at Indy, Pocono and Ontario in 1978.
