Youngest Driver Nunez To Make First Start At Watkins Glen

There is a fresh new start on the horizon for the youngest class winner in Rolex Series history. Tristan Nunez is coming from a weekend hiatus and looking to make a bounce back from his misfortune at Mid-Ohio at the Sahlen's Six Hours of the Glen this weekend at the Watkins Glen International Raceway.

"I've heard so many awesome things about The Glen and not to mention this is also another track I have yet to compete on," said Nunez. "Obviously I'm supper excited to get the weekend rolling with Mazda and Visit Florida. I've been doing iRacing laps like a mad man, so I think I should be able to get a feel for the track pretty quickly!"

Nunez is itching to get back on the track after Mid-Ohio where his day was ended early with an oil leak. Nunez and his SpeedSource co-driver Joel Miller are eager to recreate the momentum at the "The Glen" that they had after the breakthrough win at the Detroit Belle Isle Chevrolet GRAND-AM 200 earlier this month. Familiar Japanese racing driver, Yojiro Terada, will even join the duo as a third driver for Watkins Glen. Terada, a fellow Mazda factory driver that competed with them for the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona earlier this year, known for having a record number of participations (29) in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with several class victories over the years.

Nunez, of Boca Raton, Fla., will be competing for the first time this weekend at the Watkins Glen International Raceway. This 3.4-mile, 11-turn natural road course has already proven to be a challenging course for the 17-year-old Nunez. Off the track, Nunez had to be emancipated in order to compete in the Sahlen's Six Hours of the Glen given he isn't quite 18 years old yet. With that taken care of, Nunez is ready to focus all his energy on the race in hopes of another podium result.

Nunez has moved up one position each time he has raced in GRAND-AM leading up to Mid-Ohio. A strong performance at Watkins Glen in the six-hour endurance race could put him back on his streak. The #00 VISIT FLORIDA Mazda SpeedSource car is currently second in the team standings in the GX class with two race wins on the season.

GRAND-AM has been a mainstay at Watkins Glen since the first race there in 2000. Practice for this year's Sahlen's Six Hours of the Glen is set to begin on Fri., June 28 at 1:30 p.m. ET. Qualifications are scheduled for Sat., June 29 at 11:05 a.m. ET with the Round 7 race at 11 a.m. ET on Sun., June 30 and broadcast LIVE on FOX Sports' SPEED channel. The Rolex Series will be joined at Watkins Glen by a bevy of other racing series including, The Continental Tire Challenge, F2000, and the Porsche GT3 Cup.

In addition to VISIT FLORIDA & MAZDASPEED, Nunez's racing efforts are also supported by: Federal-Mogul's ChampionĀ® Spark Plugs, Bell Helmets, SparCo, OMP, and Uncle Jim. Off the track, Nunez is an advocate for safer driving as part of the Safe American Foundation and his self-made Dnt txt n drV campaign and is represented by Los Angeles-based BRANDed Management.
