2013 Motorcycle-Superstore.com Ace Forsberg Strikes Enduro X Gold On Muddy German Course

It took three races across three countries on two different continents, but Motorcycle-Superstore.com rider Maria Forsberg finally earned Enduro X gold Sunday at the 2013 X Games Munich.

The race was moved to Sunday after southern Germany was deluged with rain on Saturday, leaving muddy, rutted conditions at Olympic Stadium when the race was finally run. Fortunately for Forsberg, sloppy conditions just happen to be her specialty.

"Up in Washington where I live, it rains just about every day," Forsberg said. "So I train in muddy conditions all the time. I think that was a big advantage for me today."

Forsberg was one of the few riders who were able to make it through the course without major issues in the ruts or rock sections, and she built a solid lead aboard her KTM, which she wound up needing.

On the last lap, Forsberg had to negotiate a difficult rock section and pass a slower rider at the same time. Her preferred line was taken away, which forced her to find a path she wasn't as comfortable with. Forsberg fell and took a handful of agonizing seconds to get going again as second-place Laia Sanz, the winner in Brazil and Spain, closed the gap.

"Laia is one of the toughest competitors I've ever come across," Forsberg said. "In these Enduro X races, you know you are going to run into trouble at some point during the race. You can't let them get you down and lose focus."

Sanz got close, but got stuck in the same section herself, giving Forsberg the opportunity to get going again and seal the gold medal, her first this year and third of her X Games career.

Forsberg finished with a final time of 8 minutes, 12.407 seconds; Sanz finished in 8:32.618.

Fellow Motorcycle-Superstore.com rider Kacy Martinez got the holeshot in the race before finishing eighth overall.

On the men's side, Gary Sutherlin was the top Motorcycle Superstore finisher with a ninth-place effort.

The next EnduroCross event for Motorcycle Superstore's stable of riders will be at the August 1-4 X Games Enduro X finale in Los Angeles.
