Mason Mingus; Win-Tron Racing's Strong Performance Foiled At Winchester

A strong performance by Mason Mingus and his Win-Tron Racing team was quickly foiled on Sunday afternoon at Winchester (Ind.) Speedway in the running of the Herr’s Chase The Taste 200.

The SCOTT® Rookie of the Year contender entered the 10th race of the season with high hopes, after delivering nine straight top-10 runs in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards. Early-on, in the fifth short track race of the season, it appeared that the teenager would further amplify that statistic, but a multi-car incident in turn two on lap 128 quickly changed the complexion of the race.

After starting second when Menards pole qualifying presented by Ansell was canceled because of inclement weather, the Brentwood, Tennessee native found his No. 32 Diamond Equipment / Call 811 Before You Dig Toyota Camry exactly where he wanted to be, near the front.

Persistent showers on race day forced the Herr’s Chase The Taste 200 to take the green flag under a cautious pace, allowing the 23-competitors an ample opportunity to fully dry the track’s abrasive surface. With the caution-pace lifted at lap 10, Mingus quickly settled into the tire tracks of Frank Kimmel, his nemesis for the ARCA Racing Series championship chase.

While Mingus would trail the nine-time champion for the top spot through the race’s first 106 laps, a hard-charging No. 32 Diamond Equipment / Call 811 Before You Dig Toyota Camry would overtake the No. 44 Ansell / Menards Toyota Camry for control at the point on lap 107 with the rising star quickly forming a comfortable margin between he and Kimmel.

At the moment when all was right in the world, a multi-car incident in turn two ensued with Mingus quickly approaching the scene. Trying to avoid the chaos, Mingus found himself with nowhere to go and became the colossal victim in the seven-car pileup. Mingus was able to pull away from the scene of the crash under his own power, but immediately had to go behind the pit wall and make repairs to his automobile in order to continue.

Damage control, which included a radiator change came at a price for the Mooresville, North Carolina-based team as they fell several laps in the arrears to leader and eventual winner Kimmel.

Mingus returned to the track in 12th, the same position he was credited with when the checkered flag was thrown. Winchester marked the first finish outside the top-10 this season for the Win-Tron Racing organization.

“It’s very disappointing to finish the race like we did,” offered a dejected Mingus. “The guys on this Win-Tron Racing team gave me an excellent car, we just became a victim in someone else’s mess. We’ll take the break and regroup and try again at Chicagoland Speedway in a couple weeks.”

Unofficially, Mingus trails Kimmel by 175 points with 11 ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards events remaining in his first full-season of competition.

Next up for the ARCA Racing Series is a trip to the “Windy City” for the running of the Ansell ActivArmr® 150 on Sunday, July 21st. The event will air live on SPEED at 6:00 p.m. CST.

Exiting The Hoosier State, the Tennessean has 23 ARCA Racing Series races to his credit. During that tenure, he has acquired three top-fives and 16 top-10 finishes, including second-place runs at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway and at Toledo Speedway in May 2013. Additionally, a pole run at Mobile (Ala.) International Speedway in March, is his best time trials effort to date.
