Spencer Pumpelly Gives Flying Lizard Motorsports its First GTC Pole in Porsche 911 GT3 Cup

Flying Lizard Motorsports, with a great GT racing heritage at Lime Rock Park including an American Le Mans Series GT victory here last year, has added to its Lime Rock record as Spencer Pumpelly (Atlanta) put the #45 team Porsche 911 GT3 Cup on the class pole for tomorrow’s race. Pumpelly, who will share his drive tomorrow with Nelson Canache, Jr. (Venezuela), said the team was looking to improve its qualifying sessions.

“We have not qualified as well as we have liked so far this year, so this was a really important success for our team. This the team’s first pole of the season, and we did it in only five laps, putting less wear on our Yokohama tires than the others – the tires that the teams are required to start the race on. Nelson’s quick pace in practice this morning really built our confidence that we have a strong car. With everyone on the same second in qualifying, starting ahead of the GTC field is huge for us,” said Pumpelly.

Jeroen Bleekemolen, the Dutch driver who co-drives with Cooper MacNeil (Hindsale, Ill.) in the #22 Alex Job Racing Porsche, is second, with Damien Faulkner (Ireland), driving for TRG, third in the Porsche he will share with Ben Keating (Lavaca, Texas). Andy Lally (Atlanta) was fourth in the Dempsey Del Piero Racing Porsche.

Bleekemolen would have liked to win the pole, but he is happy with a front row start.
“Practice went really well for us on older tires, so I was hoping for a bit more in qualifying. I thought I was on a pole-winning lap when the red flag interrupted that effort, and then had one more chance at the end of the session, but a small bobble cost me a few tenths,” said Bleekemolen.

For Faulkner, TRG’s significant work on their car really paid off.

“The #66 TRG Porsche felt a lot better this session. Obviously, we're third - which is good - but we really wanted P1. We've made a significant improvement on the car since Laguna Seca. We're on the right track and the difficult work is done, but there's still more to do to get the best out of the package we have,” said Faulkner.

In GT, Porsche 911 GT3 RSRs qualified sixth, tenth and 11th in a fierce GT qualifying competition. The CORE Autosport Porsche with Patrick Long (Playa del Rey, Calif.) at the helm qualified sixth – the best of the RSRs – in the car he will share with Tom Kimber-Smith (England). His fastest time was about six-tenths of a second off the pole-sitting BMW time. Bryan Sellers (Braselton, Ga.) was 10th in the Team Falken Tire Porsche he will race tomorrow with Wolf Henzler (Germany), while Bryce Miller (Summit, N.J.) qualified the Paul Miller Racing Porsche in 11th place in the car he will co-drive with Marco Holzer (Germany).

The American Le Mans Series Northeast Grand Prix will take the green flag on Saturday, July 6, at 3:15 PM EDT, and will run two hours and 45 minutes. The race will be telecast live on both ESPN2 television (starting at 3:00 PM) and ESP3.com online (starting at 2:45 PM).
