2013 Toronto: Justin Wilson IndyCar Qualifying Recap

Justin Wilson will start the first leg of this weekend’s Honda Indy Toronto doubleheader from eighth on the IZOD IndyCar Series grid on Saturday after the Dale Coyne Racing pilot scored a fast lap time of 1:00.2954-seconds in his No. 19 Boy Scouts of America Honda in qualifying on Friday.

Wilson had been hoping for a little bit more as he chased his third career pole position on the streets of Toronto, but he didn’t get the chance to show the full promise of the hard day’s work from his Coyne crew after a red flag cut short the qualifying session.

“I was disappointed that the session ended early,” said Wilson. “I didn’t think we had enough for the pole, but I knew there was a couple more tenths in there. It was just unfortunate that the red flag came out but I’m sure everyone is in the same boat and everyone could have gone a little bit quicker. We’ll go away and study the data to try to work out how we can make our racecar faster. We have a good data base to work from and will try to get the car sorted out.”

The new starting format had the pundits ratcheting up the importance of qualifying, but after testing the starting procedure on his Honda-powered entry this morning, Wilson is looking forward to making the most of his fourth row starting spot in Saturday’s race.

“Standing start practice went well this morning--I really liked the way I launched and how the drivability was when we did our standing start practice,” said Wilson. “I’m looking forward to it. Honda has done a great job and with any luck I think we can get the Boy Scouts of America car up a couple positions right at the start.”

The standing start isn’t the only new wrinkle in the race weekend, as IndyCar stages just its second-ever double header in the modern era, another factor that has the large fan base in Toronto looking forward to a big weekend that could see a range of strategies play out.

“At Detroit everybody was a little easy on the first race and a little aggressive on the second race,” said Wilson about the first-ever double header weekend. “I don’t know if that’s going to flip flop this time or whether it’s going to be the same pattern. We’re just going to try to race smart and stay out of trouble, but be aggressive and decisive and hopefully we can get two good results out of this weekend.”

It is a busy weekend, as Race 2 qualifications will be held on Saturday morning and consist of a 30-minute session for all cars, with the starting order set by lap time. Race 1 is set to go green at 3:40 PM (ET) on Saturday with Race 2 to begin Sunday at 3:40 PM (ET).
