AMSOIL Veteran Douglas Zeroes In On Short-Track Success In Chicago

The second half of the Traxxas TORC Series presented by AMSOIL begins with a double-header weekend at Route 66 Raceway and 11-time world champion Scott Douglas is ready to make his mark on the 2013 championship chase.

Douglas has been a picture of consistency in his AMSOIL/Borla Exhaust/BFGoodrich Ford F-150, recording three runner-up and five podium finishes in the season's first eight rounds of Pro 4x4 action. The only thing eluding the 87-time national event winner this year is a victory, something he plans to remedy this weekend.

"We always seem to do well on short tracks," Douglas said. "They can set the Chicago track up a couple of different ways but being inside the half-mile oval makes it a short course no matter what design they throw at us. I believe that will work in our favor."

Route 66 Raceway should be the perfect place for Douglas to earn a checkered flag or two. He won the first race there last year and took third place in the second main event. Currently ranked third, Douglas knows a big weekend could help him close the gap, or even pass, second-place racer Ricky Johnson and/or current leader Johnny Greaves.

"We've had our opportunities but we've also suffered some misfortune," Douglas said of the first half of the season. "Little problems have seemed to crop up at the worse times but that's racing. The reality is the top three guys are all very close and anything can happen. I know this team is ready to race."

Prior to the weekend's racing action, Douglas and AMSOIL teammates Chad Hord and Brad Lovell will take part in the Joliet Cruise Night from 6-9 p.m., Thursday, in downtown Joliet. The trio of racers will meet with fans to answer questions, sign autographs and pose for pictures. Douglas' AMSOIL Ford race truck will be on display.

"The fans in Chicago are great," Douglas said, "They understand and appreciate what we do and that's exciting. I think anyone can get fired up about 4x4 trucks ripping down the front stretch at 90 mph, hitting those big jumps and flat getting after each other every lap of the race. We have such a great sport for spectators.

"With the Nationwide race going on at the Speedway next door I'm sure we'll have lots of their fans coming over to watch us and of course we'll enjoy watching those guys race as well. (NASCAR driver) Brendan Gaughan is a close friend of mine and he even jumped in one of trucks a few years ago and made it up on the podium. That was pretty impressive considering he hadn't driven an off-road truck in 10 years."

Practice begins at 11 a.m., Friday, and continues throughout the day. A free pit party at 5 p.m. kicks off the evening show, followed by a 6 p.m. autograph session. Racing begins at 7:30 p.m., with Pro 4x4 capping the evening's festivities.

Saturday's schedule includes a 6 p.m. autograph session, opening ceremonies at 7 p.m., and racing starting at 7:10 p.m., with Pro 4x4 once again completing the evening's action. SPEED TV will carry all the action.
