NASCAR Reaches 10-Year Agreement With NBC Sports Group

Staff Report, NASCAR Wire Service

In a move that will position NASCAR for continued growth over the next decade, NASCAR and NBC Sport Group announced today they have reached an agreement that grants NBCUniversal exclusive rights to the final 20 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races, final 19 NASCAR Nationwide Series events, select NASCAR Regional & Touring Series events and other live content.

The partnership begins in 2015 and runs through 2024.

With the partnership, NBC will become the exclusive home to the 10-race Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, including the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season-final which will return to network television for the first time since 2009. Of NBC Sports Group's 20 NASCAR Sprint Cup events, seven will be carried on NBC annually, with 13 airing on NBC Sports Network (NBCSN). Four of NBC Sports Group's 19 NASCAR Nationwide Series races will air on NBC, with 15 airing on NBCSN. In addition to acquiring rights for races in NASCAR's top-two premier series, NBC has also obtained exclusive rights to practice and qualifying sessions for NBC's national series events during their portion of the schedule.

NBC has also acquired Spanish-language rights, certain video-on-demand rights and exclusive TV Everywhere rights for its NASCAR Sprint Cup and NASCAR Nationwide events.

Outside the NASCAR Sprint Cup and NASCAR Nationwide Series, NBC will control rights to broadcast the NASCAR K&N Pro Series, NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, NASCAR Toyota (Mexico) Series, the NASCAR Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and NASCAR's season-ending championship banquets.

The announcement of NASCAR's new deal with NBC is coupled with the news that ESPN and TNT will not be returning to host NASCAR events after the 2014 season.

"Obviously a very exciting and huge day for the sport of NASCAR, the industry of NASCAR and all of our stakeholders," said NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France during the teleconference. "I certainly want to make mention of two partners who are not going to be renewing their rights, that being TNT and Turner and ESPN. We've been together one way or the other for 30-plus years, and they've done an outstanding job of presenting the NASCAR story week in and week out, and we'll certainly miss them in many ways."

"We are thrilled to be back," said Chairman of the NBC Sports Mark Lazarus on a teleconference earlier this afternoon. "When NBC was involved with NASCAR from 2001 to 2006, it was a very good experience for NBC, the rich history of NASCAR. We think that the stakeholders of NASCAR, led by Brian as well as the teams, the owners, the tracks, the drivers, will all welcome us back with open arms based on previous history and experience with us, and we couldn't be happier to have NASCAR back as a tent-pole property for NBC and NBC Sports Network."

With today's announcement of the partnership and the FOX agreement reached last Fall, there are only a few remaining holes in NASCAR's TV schedule: three NASCAR Sprint Cup races and 14 NASCAR Nationwide races.
