Jakes Set The 11th Fastest Time At Mid-Ohio Open Test; Rahal Sidelined By Fuel Pressure Issue

Morning rain forced a late start to today’s IZOD IndyCar Series open test at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course but once the track dried enough to begin running James Jakes was able to complete 47 laps on the 2.258-mile road course. Graham Rahal was sidelined with a fuel pressure issue and was not able to test.

“We weren’t able to run at all today which is really a shame,” said Rahal, 24. “The guys worked really hard to fix the problem but unfortunately we weren’t able to do it in time to get back on track.”

Both Rahal and Jakes completed installation runs before the lunch break but once back out, a fuel pressure issue was discovered on the No. 15 Midas / Big O Tires entry and the team was unable to repair the problem before the session ended at 5 p.m. ET.

“The No. 15 car had a fuel pressure issue that we found after lunch,” said Team Manager Ricardo Nault. “The guys changed everything in the fuel cell but the problem continued. The issue demanded that we remove the engine to facilitate a proper fix and this took us out for the rest of the day but we will have it fixed for Friday. It’s disappointing but its better that it happened today than losing all day Friday.”

By the end of the test, James Jakes had completed a total of 47 laps in the No. 16 Acorn Stairlifts entry with a best lap time of 1:06.2761 and ranked eleventh overall of the 24 cars present. At one point, he held the second fastest lap time.

“The test went pretty well,” said Jakes, 25. “We had a couple of niggling issues early on and obviously it kept raining and stopping, raining and stopping which was pretty frustrating, but once the track dried out we got some pretty solid running in. We were able to try a lot of things including the new tire compound. It’s a shame we couldn’t get inside the top-10 but we were close. I think we’ve got a good baseline for the weekend and I’m looking forward to it.”

The Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio will be televised live on NBC Sports Network at 3 p.m. ET Sunday, August 4. The network will also air a qualifying show on Saturday, August 3 at 5 p.m. ET.
