2013 Mid-Ohio: Chevrolet IndyCar Race Preview

After a short break in the schedule, the Chevrolet IndyCar V6 teams and drivers head to the rolling hills of central Ohio to take on the challenges of the 2.258-mile, 13-turn Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course near Lexington, Ohio.

"Team Chevy is anxious to get back to racing after a couple of weekends off to recharge," said Chris Berube, Chevrolet Racing Program Manager, IZOD IndyCar Series. "The Mid-Ohio circuit is always a favorite that poses a highly technical challenge for the drivers and teams to get the most out of their cars. The Open Test hosted by IndyCar on Wednesday will provide a good opportunity to get dialed in before the race weekend starts. With a baseline from last year when Team Chevy secured 7 of the top 10 finishers, we have a strong foundation to build upon, coupled with significant improvements since then and the best engine reliability in the Series. It should be another great IZOD IndyCar race weekend for the fans."

With just six races remaining in the 2013 IZOD IndyCar Series season, the 90-lap/203.22-mile race is pivotal in the overall championship battle. Team Penske’s Helio Castroneves holds a 29-point lead after 13 races as he prepares for the Honda Indy 200 at the track where in 10 previous career starts, he has earned two wins (2000 and 2001), two poles and five podium finishes. He’s led 141 laps at Mid-Ohio over the years and has completed all but three laps of competition in his starts. Castroneves has one win this season, in June at Texas Motor Speedway.

Defending Series’ champion, Ryan Hunter-Reay, sits third in the standings on the strength of two wins (Barber Motorsports Park and Milwaukee Mile) with his Andretti Autosport teammate Marco Andretti sitting fourth in points.

Chevrolet continues to lead the Manufacturers’ Championship standings with seven wins to-date.

Qualifying for Sunday’s race will be broadcast on NBC Sports Network on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at 5:00 p.m. ET.

Sunday’s race is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. ET with live television coverage on NBC Sports Network.

Live radio coverage will be on XM Radio Channel 94 and Sirius Satellite Radio Channel 212. In addition, IndyCar live timing and scoring with the radio broadcast can be found at www.indy.car.com

HELIO CASTRONEVES, NO. 3 PPG TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET, POINTS LEADER (ONE 2013 WIN): "Mid-Ohio is a fun track. It’s a classic road course with some high-speed and low-speed corners and some elevation changes. It has a little bit of everything and it should make for a good race to watch on Sunday. I’m looking forward to getting back behind the wheel of the PPG Chevrolet and see if we can build on our momentum this weekend."

RYAN HUNTER-REAY, NO 1 DHL ANDRETTI AUTOSPORT CHEVROLET, 3rd IN STANDINGS (TWO 2013 WINS): "The race at Mid-Ohio is one of my favorite rounds of the IndyCar schedule. Mid-Ohio is the heart of American open-wheel road racing and I have some great memories over the years at this track. I’ve been on the podium a few times here and following tough weekends we had at Pocono and Toronto, we’ll be working hard to rebound and cut into the championship points lead. We’re a tenacious bunch at Andretti Autosport and we’re determined to make a late season run at the championship."

MARCO ANDRETTI, NO. 25 RC COLA ANDRETTI AUTOSPORT CHEVROLET, 4th IN STANDINGS: "Mid-Ohio is one of the tracks where I have a ton of laps for whatever reason, so I always enjoy going back. I have always run decent there and I think after spending some time in the shop going through data, I have a lot better feel for what we were doing wrong last year. I think we know where the time is so hopefully we are right and can have the RC (Cola) Chevy on top this weekend."

TONY KANAAN, NO. 11 SUNOCO-TURBO KV RACING TECHNOLOGY - SH RACING CHEVROLET, 6th IN STANDINGS (ONE 2013 WIN): "This will be our fourth race with Sunoco and TURBO sponsorship on the car and we've had some pretty good results so far. We placed third at both Texas and Iowa and at Pocono we led 15 laps before I made a mistake while racing Scott Dixon for the lead or we might have been on the podium there too. Mid Ohio is one of the most physical tracks on the circuit and it would be really nice to have our final race with Sunoco and TURBO in 2013 be a win. The crowds at Mid Ohio are always impressive and the track has great history - I just want to get my name in the record books as a winner there."

JAMES HINCHCLIFFE, NO. 27 GODADDY ANDRETTI AUTOSPORT CHEVROLET, 8th IN STANDINGS (THREE 2013 WINS): "Mid-Ohio is one of the great road courses in the country. It's one of the most fun places to physically drive an Indy car. I love racing there. Last year the GoDaddy Chevy was quick but we had a problem in qualifying, so went for a three (pit) stops in the race. It was a blast because I got to run qualifying laps all day! I was worn out at the end but it paid off as we got up to fifth. We should have a solid car, and some added track time with the test, so we just want to get there and get to work!"

WILL POWER, NO. 12 VERIZON TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET, 10th IN STANDINGS: "I think it’s going to be a super-competitive weekend at Mid-Ohio. My focus is to learn as much as we can at the test and then give it our all to try and get pole on Saturday in the Verizon Chevrolet. Qualifying is so important there and we’ve won the pole there the last couple of races so we know we are capable of doing it. Then, it’s a matter of running a strong, clean race and try to go for the win."

E.J. VISO, NO. 5 TEAM VENEZUELA PDVSA CITGO ANDRETTI AUTOSPORT HVM CHEVROLET, 12th IN STANDINGS: "I'm very happy to be returning to the road courses. I think Mid-Ohio is a place that is going to suit us very well. The team has had great performances lately and we just need to continue the momentum. I'm very close to being in the top 10, and hopefully Mid-Ohio is the race that will allow me that."

ED CARPENTER, NO. 20 FUZZY’S VODKA/ED CARPENTER RACING CHEVROLET, 14th IN STANDINGS: "We have had a good opportunity to go through all of our equipment since the last races at Toronto. That three-month stretch was pretty tough on all of the teams, especially if you had some repairs. We have a very experienced crew and they have been through these things before. So we feel good about regrouping for the last six races of the season. I’m very proud of how the team has worked together after Derrick left. Several of the guys took some of Derrick’s (Walker, former general manager) responsibilities as did I. We are a smaller team and our crew guys do a variety of things for the team. Now we are prepared for the last part of the 2013 schedule. Mid-Ohio is a fast track and a fun challenge for a driver. But it is very physical. Each track is a little different, but Mid-Ohio is always one of the toughest. But if you go to Milwaukee and Iowa, those ovals are very physically challenging too. A place like Indy is very mentally tasking."

SIMONA DE SILVESTRO, NO. 78 NUCLEAR ENTERGY AREVA KV RACING TECHNOLOGY CHEVROLET, 19th IN STANDINGS: "I am real excited to go to Mid-Ohio. It is a really fun place to go to; I’ve always done pretty well there even when I was driving Atlantics and things like that. We want to start a really strong end of the season from Mid-Ohio on to the end."

SEBASTIAN SAAVEDRA, NO. 6 TRUECAR DRAGON RACING CHEVROLET, 22nd IN STANDINGS: "Looking forward on keeping the momentum we've been able to build up the last races. It's never too late to move forward and even though there's only 5 events we are fully committed in giving it all until the last lap in Fontana."

ORIOL SERVIA, NO. 4 NATIONAL GUARD PANTHER RACING CHEVROLET, __ IN STANDINGS: "I’m very excited to be back in the National Guard car. Iowa was my last race, and while I love ovals, I’m really looking forward to getting back on a road course. Mid-Ohio is a very technical track and a (road course) specialist track, but I feel like everybody in our paddock is becoming a specialist because there are so many strong guys out there. We have a test day before the race that will be a big help for us fine-tuning the car, and especially for me to knock off a little rust. I’m looking forward to being competitive this weekend and there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be."
