2013 Mid-Ohio: Justin Wilson IndyCar Qualifying Recap

Justin Wilson delivered his best qualifying effort of the 2013 IZOD IndyCar Series season to date on Saturday when he put the No. 19 Boy Scouts of America Honda seventh on the grid for the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course with a quick time of 1:05.9405-seconds for Dale Coyne Racing.

Utilizing the Firestone ‘Red’ tires, Wilson earned the fifth fastest starting spot in the first qualifying group which advanced him to the second round of qualifying that saw the top-12 cars competing to advance into the Firestone Fast Six. Once again on the Firestone ‘Reds,’ Wilson’s quick time during the second segment secured him seventh on the grid – just five hundredths of a second off of the sixth starting spot.

“I’m reasonably happy with starting seventh,” said Wilson of the qualifying run. “I was hoping to break into the Firestone Fast Six. I love this track at Mid-Ohio and I was hoping we could do it here. But we just missed out. We’ll go away and work at it and see if we can get a little bit more speed and try to get a balance and work out where I can improve and hopefully come back tomorrow and challenge for the win. I’m really looking forward to the race I think it’s going to be a tough hard fought-out race. It’s going to be about speed, fuel economy, strategy and a little bit of luck and hopefully we can put it all together.”

The weekend got off to a strong start for Wilson and his Dale Coyne Racing team as the No. 19 Boy Scouts of America Honda set the sixth quickest time of the first practice on Friday, but an electrical issue sidelined the effort after just four laps in Friday’s second practice with Wilson missing out on the valuable track time during the second session. The team went to work to make repairs overnight and Wilson returned to the track with some positive progress on Saturday morning as Wilson completed the 45-minute session with the fifth fastest time.

Wilson will start the 90-lap race, which marks Round 14 of the IZOD IndyCar Series Championship, from the fourth row on Sunday. The race is set to begin at 3:40 PM (ET). NBCSports will carry live coverage of the event.

Weekend schedule: A final 30-minute practice will take place on Sunday at 11:00 AM (ET) with the race set to begin at3:40 PM (ET).

TV Listings: NBCSports will carry live coverage of Sunday’s race beginning at 3:00 PM (ET), with radio coverage by the IMS Radio Network, including on Sirius and XM Channels 211 and www.indycar.com. Fans in the UK will find live coverage of the race at 8:00 PM (BST) on BT Sport 2HD.
