Red Bull Indianapolis GP MotoGP Press Conference Transcript (Marquez, Pedrosa, Lorenzo)
MODERATOR: Here we go, ladies and gentlemen. What a race we've had here at Indianapolis. In first place is Marc Marquez. In second place, Dani Pedrosa. And in third place, Jorge Lorenzo. (Applause)
Well, of course, we'll start with the race winner, Marc Marquez. I think you like America, Marc, don't you? Must be a real favorite country now.
MARC MARQUEZ: Yeah. Will be my second country. No, we did -- I think we did the best we can in MotoGP. I feel so good this weekend. And then on the race, the plan was clear. It was just try to save the tires in the beginning, and when the fuel comes a little bit down, try to attack, try to open some gap. And was working well. So in the end with that gap, I was able to enjoy the slides, and I feel good.
So that 25 points are important because before to come here I thought that will be a good chance to take the 25 points. Now we come back to Europe, so there will be -- will be a little bit different because come Brno and Silverstone, Jorge and Yamaha are working quite good. So we will see what we can do there.
MODERATOR: Just about the perfect weekend, practice, qualifying, warmup and the race.
MARQUEZ: Yeah, we did the perfect weekend. I would try to repeat, but will be difficult. Anyway, that is important after the summer break. Again feels so good with the bike, it's the most important for me.
MODERATOR: Twenty-one-point lead in the championship, still eight races to go, and you know that these two are going to be coming back at you very strong, aren't they?
MARQUEZ: Yeah. Yeah, yeah. We will see. We are leading the championship but still remain eight races, so nearly half of the season. Dani and Jorge, they have a lot of experience, so they will manage well. I will try to continue in the same way, but will be difficult because I know that in some circuits I will struggle a little bit more, some circuits less.
But anyway, we will try continue same lines and way, same concentration, and we will see at the end of the month.
MODERATOR: Brno next week, you couldn't imagine anywhere a lot more different than Indianapolis than going to Brno, could you?
MARQUEZ: Yeah, Brno, it's completely different track compared to here in Indianapolis. The grip is so good there, the track, also, is quite fast. So I think there, Jorge will be there the fastest in the beginning because they did a test there. So they will -- we will see, but we will try to be there, try to concentrate on our work and try to be quiet all the weekend.
MODERATOR: Marc, congratulations. Terrific win here at Indianapolis.
Second place of course, Repsol teammate, Dani Pedrosa. Dani, after everything that's happened to you, injuries and everything else, it wasn't a bad result, was it?
DANI PEDROSA: Yes, I'm pleased to be already in this chair because it's been tough, tough, tough race but also tough situation. I mean, if you see the race that I did Monday, you won't believe that I could do this race. And actually I'm the first one -- I'm surprised. I am very happy to be here because I was trying to manage the race.
I knew in the first laps I could be there. But afterwards I didn't know how much I could control the bike. Honda is normally moving a lot, and you need a lot of energy to control it. When the tires start to move, you need to be very agile on the bike and move around, play with the bike, try to pick up and try to stay low and things like this.
In my riding these weeks, it's been very static, and I cannot try to do it. I start to lose touch with them, but I tried to keep my rhythm up. In the last laps I had something left, so I pull and I push my best, and I get a little closer to Jorge and make the pass. And finally to take a second place, which is very good result.
MODERATOR: Brno comes so, so quickly for you, doesn't? Still recovering, you've got to go through it all again, haven't you? But seven days should make a difference.
PEDROSA: Yeah, I mean more than the seven days, this race, because in the last weeks I did not train physically. I just cycle a little bit, static cycling, but couldn't really do anything at the gym. I had to stay very quiet and at house. Actually. I felt that I had not so much energy riding because my arm, you know, it was -- I lost a little weight, also. And I guess this race will make me the body wake up to be a little stronger in the next race.
MODERATOR: Dani, thank you. Congratulations in second place.
We come to Jorge Lorenzo, of course running the Yamaha. Jorge, you gave it everything, didn't you? You certainly went off very quick and held the lead for a good time.
JORGE LORENZO: Yeah, you know, I think we play our cards the best way possible because I wasn't really, really good. But I make it with the start and with Marc, I was fast. I was surprised to be so quick and constant in the first part of the race. But then Marc start to go faster and faster. I start to go in my pace and the tires start to go, and it was difficult to keep a normal pace. But I was wishing to finish in second place and not so far from Marc. But suddenly the rear tire start to drop so quick, so much. Never happened in my career in MotoGP, but this time it happens big, big. So I couldn't do so much to defend the second place, and I thought to finish and don't crash and I get the points.
MODERATOR: And the injury, getting better all the time? It's a big test for it, wasn't it?
LORENZO: Yeah, it's not only the injury, no. It's also not training for about two months in a hard way. But the injury is not perfect, still some little pains in the braking and also change direction. But, anyway, today I was in acceptable shape, and I could go faster at the beginning when the tires were good.
MODERATOR: I would imagine you look forward more to Brno and Silverstone than you did Indianapolis.
LORENZO: Yeah. We need some push now, some pieces maybe, some evolution to be more competitive. Because now it's difficult to fight with them.
Anyway, with the bike we have, maybe in Brno it's going to be the same, so in Brno or Silverstone, normally is more suitable track for us. So let's see what happen. You never know in racing, sometimes happens something that you didn't expect. But normally must be better in Brno and Silverstone.
MODERATOR: Jorge, congratulations to third place.
That's me, ladies and gentlemen. If you put your hands up, and the microphone will come to you.
Q: Marc, what happened to you at the start? Did you do something wrong or was it part of the plan?
MARQUEZ: I don't know. I need to check on that. At one point, I need improve. I already say yesterday. But yeah, I did improve the starts. And at the moment, maybe it's the point where I lose more in the race.
MODERATOR: Anybody else?
Q: Did any of you consider the harder rear tire option?
MARQUEZ: I try on the practice, but you lose, in my opinion. For example, in my case, I lose too much in the edge grip, and then I was not able to use because, OK, maybe the second part of the race, the pace was the same with the soft tire and the hard one. But the first part of the race you lose nearly 0.6, 0.8 every lap. So it was no need to choose that tire.
PEDROSA: I tried the tire, and I was more, as I said, fast. But basically the pace with the soft tire. It was a little more stable. This year it hasn't make sense to use the hard tires because they are not working properly. So looks like in Brno we may have a different one. So let's check it there.
MODERATOR: Jorge? Did you think about changing the tires? I think you stuck with what you had from the word go.
LORENZO: No, it was the soft for us.
Q: For the three of you. We heard about Valentino and Cal and the situation on the track, especially for next year when MotoGP will be back. What about the track issue today during the race? Was it toughest like during the practices, or did you experience something else? Or what does the track need to improve for next year?
MARQUEZ: For me it's fine. (Laughter)
Yeah, you know, it's a different track than the other ones. I slide a little bit more. But I like it, that feeling. So for me it's fine.
PEDROSA: Well, normally in practice you can feel from the first section which is different asphalt to the second part, which is a little more -- infield more slippery. But somehow today in the race in the first, actually the first section was really rough, and then in the second one I felt a little more stable, the tires compared from beginning to end of the race. So I think when we come here the first time, the big problem was that it was super-bumpy and now it's not anymore, so should be OK.
LORENZO: For me, I think it's positive to compete here because it's important race for MotoGP. So if we only improve the tarmac, make it less bumpy and more grippy, more regular for all the track, it's going to be perfect for us.
Q: Jorge, now you push more with Yamaha to get sooner the seamless gearbox, more than before because you have to recover points in the championship?
LORENZO: No, I don't think the points make a big difference about this decision for Yamaha. But I will hope to have it in Brno, yes.
Q: Jorge, when you said that the tire drops at the end, what is the biggest problem? Is that it's spinning outside of exiting the corners or that you lose grip entry and middle?
LORENZO: On the practice, I was worried for -- about the race for the left side, that drops the left side. So practically happens in the right. No, in the right was really bad at the end of the race. I had to reduce the speed two seconds or even more, and I couldn't defend the second place. Almost every corner on the right was almost crashing, so I had to be very slow.
Q: There's been word that there's a chance that Indianapolis may reconfigure the track a little bit next year. This is basically a flat track for you riders. Would you like to see some elevation changes in the track if they decide to do that before next year and years moving forward?
MARQUEZ: For me, no. You know, it's what I already say. Always it's good to have different kind of track during all the championship. This one it's a little bit different than the other ones because it's completely flat. Also have three different surface during all the laps. So you need to adapt for the riding style. So for me, that, also, it's important. You know, we are in a championship that every track cannot be the same with the same grip. So you need to adapt with your riding style every weekend.
PEDROSA: Same. (Laughter)
MODERATOR: Anybody else? No?
OK. Gentlemen, thank you all very much. We'll see you in Brno. Thank you.
