2013 Atlanta: JR Motorsports NASCAR Nationwide Race Preview

Regan Smith
TaxSlayer.com Chevrolet Camaro

"Atlanta is a fast and fun racetrack. It always ends up being quite a battle of car control because of how fast the tires give up there. That makes for an interesting race. There are a lot of different lanes where you can try and get your car to work. Usually the preferred line is up around the wall, but there are plenty of options there depending on how your car feels.

"It’s going to be important that we get all we can each week. There are only 10 races to go and the championship will be decided in the coming weeks. If we keep bringing the solid cars like we have been to the track, and minimize mistakes, we have just as good a shot as anybody to win this thing. This team won’t give up, and that’s the mentality we need to have."

Kasey Kahne
Great Clips Chevrolet Camaro

"Your car may be good on the bottom early in the race at Atlanta, but as the track changes the car may work better up top. It's important to move around to make sure you are running the quickest line. A line that didn't work early may be the right line later in the race. Just because another driver is having success with one line doesn't mean the setup you have in your car will automatically produce the same kind of results."

NNS CHAMPIONSHIP BATTLE THICKENS WITH 10 TO GO - Of the 10 events left on the schedule, the Nationwide Series will be returning to seven tracks for a second time this season in races at Richmond International Raceway, Chicagoland Speedway, Kentucky Motor Speedway, Dover International Speedway, Charlotte Motor Speedway, Texas Motor Speedway and Phoenix International Raceway. Smith has an average finish of 12.1 in those races and only finished outside the top-13 once. He has accumulated 190 points in those seven races.

KAHNE AT ATLANTA - Kahne racks up impressive statistics at Atlanta’s fast 1.54-mile quad oval. In NNS competition, he owns four top-five and seven top-10 finishes in 11 starts, including six consecutive top- 10s from 2003 to 2008. Add in his Cup resume at the facility, and the Enumclaw, Wash.-native holds two wins, six top-five and eight top-10 finishes. Across both series, Kahne has led 423 laps at Atlanta.

COMPARATIVE TRACKS - Kahne drove the No. 5 Great Clip Chevrolet for JRM earlier this year at Charlotte Motor Speedway and Texas Motor Speedway. Both tracks are also 1.5-mile quad-ovals. Kahne earned his season-best effort of second at Charlotte. He finished eighth at Texas, leading 26 laps.

RETURN TO ATLANTA - This weekend’s race marks Smith’s first NNS start in Atlanta since the spring of 2007. The TaxSlayer team has shown success at 1.5-mile facilities this season, notching three top-10 finishes. Smith is averaging 31 points per race at 1.5-mile tracks in 2013.

7 TEAM CHASSIS INTEL - Smith and the 7 team will bring chassis No. 786 to Atlanta. Smith owns two top-10 finishes with this chassis at Texas Motor Speedway and Dover International Speedway. It also raced at Chicagoland last month.

5 TEAM CHASSIS UPDATE - Kahne will race chassis 804 at Atlanta this weekend. This chassis made its debut at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in July. This marks its second race.

MEET SMITH AT JR NATION MERCHANDISE HAULER - Smith will sign autographs at the JR Nation merchandise hauler, located in the Atlanta Motor Speedway fan concourse, beginning at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31.

2010 ATLANTA VICTORY - JR Motorsports and its 88 team secured a win at Atlanta Motor Speedway in 2010 with Jamie McMurray. McMurray took the lead on lap 172 and cruised through the next 23 laps to earn JRM its ninth series victory. The organization has since added three more wins to its tally with driver Regan Smith, giving it 12 overall wins.

LISTENING EXPERIENCE ON THE AXIS OF JUNIOR - From the communications team at JR Motorsports comes a new way for Dale Jr. fans to get their Junior fix. Dirty Mo Radio is the new online hub for Junior-related podcasts, keeping JR Nation informed and entertained each week throughout the season. Dirty Mo Radio is housed at DaleJr.com and is also available free of charge on all popular podcasting outlets. DMR’s start-up show, "The Dale Jr. Download", debuted as the No. 2 ranked sports podcast and No. 30 overall podcast on iTunes the day after its Feb. 18 launch.

WIN DALE JR.’S RIDE IS BACK FOR 2013 - One lucky winner will walk away with the keys to Dale Jr.’s Corvette this year. The Dale Jr. Foundation is giving fans the chance to win one of three prizes with the purchase of a $25 raffle ticket, including a shot at Earnhardt Jr.’s own 2013 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport. The contest will run through Oct. 1, 2013, with all proceeds benefitting The Dale Jr. Foundation.
