2013 NHRA: Spencer Massey NHRA U.S. Nationals Event Recap: First Round
Spencer Massey's Battery Extender Powered by Schumacher dragster was in the first pair of Top Fuel dragsters that went on the Lucas Oil Raceway track near Indianapolis at 11 a.m. on Monday.
It was cool and overcast, conditions the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series hadn't seen throughout the previous three days of qualifying at the prestigious U.S. Nationals.
Massey's Battery Extender dragster was on smooth pass until a part in the engine malfunctioned, sending a fireball out the back of the 10,000-horsepower dragster and ending the day early for the team based in nearby Brownsburg, Ind.
"It was just an engine malfunction," Massey said. "It happens. I guess we need to look at it from the positive side and it happened here and hopefully it doesn't happen again in Charlotte or at any of the other Countdown races.
"We're definitely disappointed. But we have to keep the big picture in mind and that's going rounds in the Countdown. The points will reset and we will too. That's what you have to do. It's like a whole new start. We have a big opportunity coming up and we need to focus on that, take advantage and get this Battery Extender dragster going rounds."
Massey will enter the Countdown to the Championship six-race playoff second in NHRA Top Fuel standings. The Countdown begins in two weeks at zMAX Dragway near Charlotte, where Massey won his first of four Wally trophies thus far in 2013.
"We just need to be consistent. Charlotte seems to be one of those places that's good to us, so we are excited to go there. We got the win there in the spring at the four-wide race and we want to sweep Charlotte.
"The guys will go back to the shop, get everything ready for four Countdown races in a row and you know I'm looking forward to those four consecutive weeks of racing."
