Justin Wilson Returns to IndyCar Race Action for Houston Doubleheader

While it has been over one month since the IZOD IndyCar Series race in Baltimore, driver Justin Wilson has been operating at full-speed ahead of this weekend’s doubleheader event in Houston as IndyCar stages The Shell and Pennzoil Grand Prix.

Since Wilson’s fourth place finish with Dale Coyne Racing in the No. 19 Boy Scouts of America Honda at Baltimore four weeks ago, he’s competed in two GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series events for Michael Shank Racing – most recently finishing second in last weekend’s GRAND-AM season-finale event at Lime Rock Park. Wilson tested with Dale Coyne Racing at Fontana and was also invited to try out a McLaren 12C Spider at Fontana for Racer Magazine. IndyCar is staging its first race event at Reliant Park this weekend, but it’s not the first visit to the street circuit for Wilson. He raced at the track when Champ Car competed there in 2006 and 2007. Wilson scored fifth in his 2006 Houston debut and followed that effort up by qualifying third and finishing 10th the following year.

“I remember it was really bumpy,” said Wilson of the Houston circuit. “It was very low grip with the car sliding around a lot so you’re just trying to get the car to ride over a lot of concrete seams and changes of track surface. It’s going to be challenging. It’s going to be hot – I remember that much! The last time I raced there we raced at night to try to make it a little bit cooler. Open wheel racing at night, on a street circuit was pretty tough. It was a fun event – really well done so I’m looking forward to getting back there.”

Wilson will be targeting a return to the IndyCar podium in this weekend’s two 90-lap races around the 1.683-mile, 10-turn temporary street circuit. Two of Wilson’s three podium finishes this year have come on street courses (Long Beach & Detroit). In eight street circuit events this year, Wilson has claimed two podiums, three top-five finishes, and five top-10 results. He will look to add to that positive tally this weekend as he currently sits sixth in the championship and aims to break into the top-five.

Qualifying for the first race of the doubleheader weekend will take place on Friday and follow the format of three 10-minute rounds of eliminations, culminating in the Firestone Fast Six. A 30-minute qualifying session for the second race will be held on Saturday morning with the starting order set by lap time. Saturday’s Race 1 will feature a standing start, while Sunday’s Race 2 will utilize the traditional rolling start.

Weekend Schedule: Wilson will see a 1 hour, 30 minute practice session Friday morning ahead of Firestone Fast 6 qualifying which will be held Friday afternoon at 3:05 PM (ET). Qualifying for Race 2 is scheduled to begin Saturday morning at 10:45 AM (ET). Race 1 will go green Saturday at 2:40 PM (ET). A 30-minute IndyCar warm-up will take place Sunday morning with Race 2 to begin at 12:40 PM (ET).

TV Listings: NBCSports will carry live coverage of Saturday’s Race 1 beginning at 3:00 PM (ET) as well as Sunday’s Race 2 at 1:00 PM (ET) with radio coverage by the IMS Radio Network, including on Sirius and XM Channels 211 and www.indycar.com. Fans in the UK will find TV coverage of Race 1 on BT Sport 2 at 8:00 PM (BST) on Saturday and Race 2 will be shown on ESPN at 6:00 PM (BST) on SundayLive timing and scoring will also be available at racecontrol.indycar.com.
