KV Racing Technology's Simona De Silvestro Finishes 10th In Shell & Pennzoil Grand Prix Of Houston Race 2

The weather went from the mid-nineties with high humidity, to the mid-fifties and rain, then back to the high-seventies with humidity in less than 24-hours. Despite the unpredictable weather KV Racing Technology driver Simona De Silvestro still managed to turn in another top-10 performance, placing 10th today in the Shell & Pennzoil Grand Prix of Houston Race 2 in Houston, Texas. Teammate Tony Kanaan had an incident while working lap 33 ending his race.

Conditions were so bad in the morning that the track was deemed "undriveable" therefore canceling qualifying. However, by the start of the race the weather was perfect and the race began on time with cars gridded based on the entrant points prior to the start of this weekend's competition.

De Silvestro, in the No. 78 Nuclear Clean Air Energy - KV Racing Technology car, started 17th on the inside of Row No. 8.The talented 25-year-old Swiss driver had to overcome an early race incident and a penalty for avoidable contact, which dropped her to 23rd on lap seven, but showed her now trademark determination to battle her way back through the field step-by-step. De Silvestro was running 12th prior to her first pit stop on lap 29. From there she drove a steady, smart race and was sitting just outside the top-10 when she was able to avoid a huge, scary last lap crash to move into 10th place.

"First, I hope that everybody is ok from the last lap," De Silvestro said. "In general with our race, I didn't get off the line really well and then got into an incident with Rahal. I don't think he saw me and I had to bail over the curb and got tangled up there. Then we just started fighting back. I think our car was ok, actually pretty fast, but when you're in the back it's definitely more difficult, so to salvage a top-ten from where we started is pretty good. I want to give a really big thanks to the team for this weekend as well as to Chevy and the Nuclear Clean Air Energy campaign. It was really good weekend!"

Kanaan, piloting the No. 11 Hydroxycut - KV Racing Technology - SH Racing machine, gridded 11th and lined up on the inside of Row No. 6. He got off to a good start despite not pushing the car and was running solidly in the top-10 getting as high as seventh. Kanaan pitted during a yellow flag on lap 29, but shortly thereafter the 38-year-old Brazilian made contact with the wall in turn eight damaging the car beyond repair and ending his day in 24th.

Commenting on his day Kanaan said, "We had brake issues yesterday and still had them today. I wasn't pushing the car. I got loose coming out of turn eight and got into the marbles. It was my mistake. I feel bad for the guys. We still have one more race to go on the oval in Fontana and I feel we have a good chance there."

De Silvestro scored 20 points today and sits tied for 14th in the championship race with 338 points. In her last nine events she has put together a remarkable streak of results that has seen her jump five places in the standings. The native of Switzerland, who is also nicknamed the Iron Maiden, has placed in the top-10 eight times this year including two top-five finishes and a podium she earned her yesterday when she finished an IndyCar career-high second.

Kanaan earned sixpoints today and is 11th in the championship standings with 361 points.

He has earned six top-10 finishes this season including five top-five showings, three podiums and a victory at the 2013 Indianapolis 500.

Next up for KVRT is the MATV 500, October 18-19, at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California. The race will be broadcast live on NBC starting at 8:00 p.m. ET.
