Longhurst's Last Race Ever As The Boat Works Fires Up

Racing car driver Tony Longhurst will take to the track for the last time in the 2013 Auto One V8 Ute Racing Series - protected by ARMOR ALL at Bathurst this weekend. The two-time Bathurst 1000 winner is retiring from his impressive motorsport career to focus on his boating passion and new position at the helm of The Boat Works.

“I’ll be racing in The Boat Works Ute at Bathurst. It will be my last race ever. It seems fitting,” says Tony, who won the Bathurst 1000 in 1988 with Tomas Mezera and again in 2001 with Mark Skaife amongst many more memorable finishes.

“I’ve been running in the Ute races this year, doing a few here and there. You know you’re getting too old when you get your ears boxed too much. And I much prefer to be coming first,” says Tony, smiling.

The Boat Works, a 9.2hectare complex on the Coomera River, has already experienced Tony’s competitive pace with a record number of boats lifted since he took the reigns in July.

“The yard is up 30% on what it was at this time last year. Our half-price hardstand and mid-week rate campaign is working, and we’re in for another record month,” says Tony.

“Our tenants are flat out. They can’t believe the difference in business in just a few months, they’re having to put more staff on.”

“I could see huge potential for this offering, why not get the numbers through? The yard is fantastic, the staff are great, and the facility is good. It’s nice to have competition.”

“As we get stronger, it will make everyone in the industry lift their game. And that’s good for the area. It’s good for people. It creates jobs and builds the precinct,” says Longhurst.

On top of the increase in yard activity, the marine service is set to deliver some groundbreaking new offerings coinciding with the Gold Coast International Marine Expo.

The Boat Works Ute will also be on show at the marine expo, the weekend after George Miedecke replaces Longhurst in the driver’s seat at the Gold Coast 600.
