2013 Charlotte II: NASCAR Sprint Cup Starting Line-Up & Race Preview

By Mike Sulka

The NASCAR Sprint Cup series will run the 54th Annual Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway which is the fifth race in the 'Chase'. In all, 109 races have been run at the track built in 1959. Charlotte is a 1.5-mile quad-shaped oval with 24 degree banking in the turns and 5 degrees on the straights. The front stretch kink is a very long 1,980 feet, while the backstretch is a bit shorter at 1,500 feet. If NASCAR fans take advantage of the free parking and fill every seat, there will be 165,000 in attendance this evening.

The first NASCAR Sprint Cup race - World 600 - at Charlotte Motor Speedway had 60 cars and was won by Joe Lee Johnson in his '60 Chevrolet.

You can't over look the fact that Charlotte Motor Speedway may be the house that 5-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson built. Others have had more success over the recent races, but Johnson has won at Charlotte six times - including the 'Chase' race in 2009, and the most recent All-star race this past Spring. Plus, he has finished second twice. But in the last five Cup races, Johnson has just one third place credit on his record.

Looking at Pole sitters, it would appear Jeff Gordon is in for a long night. The Pole sitter has won this race just two times since 1998. Both times, it was won by Jimmie Johnson.

Sorry Jeff.

Looking at recent history there is one driver that has stood out at Charlotte, it is Toyota driver Kyle Busch. Over the last seven races at Charlotte Busch is the only driver with five top-five finishes, only Denny Hamlin compares with four top-five finishes. Busch might be a good pick for the win except that he's never won in 18 tries, and an engine foiled his Spring run.

So where this is really headed is that Charlotte has turned into one of those unpredictable races. Over the last 10 races, the track has produced nine different winners. The only name that has won twice during that stretch... Kevin Harvick.

With that in mind, we are going to pick Kevin Harvick to win. He won last week, and he'll start on the front row this week. He's got the hot foot.

But keep an eye on Jimmie Johnson - since this is his house - and Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin and Greg Biffle for their consistency.

So enjoy a great night of racing!
