2013 Charlotte II: Justin Allgaier NASCAR Nationwide Race Recap

The NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) completed its last night race of the season at Charlotte Motor Speedway (CMS) in the Dollar General 300. The weekend began with two practice sessions on Thursday, one in the afternoon and one in the evening. The No. 31 BRANDT Chevrolet finished both practice sessions in 21st place. For qualifying, Allgaier went out 25th of 46 cars on Friday afternoon. After laying down a lap of 29.966 seconds, he earned the 12th-starting spot for the Dollar General 300. The BRANDT racing team brought the same chassis Allgaier finished fifth with at Kansas Speedway last weekend. After staying in the top-15 all night at CMS, Allgaier drove the No. 31 BRANDT Professional Agriculture Chevrolet Camaro home to a sixth-place finish for Turner Scott Motorsports.

The NNS took the green flag Friday night under the lights at CMS. Allgaier started in the 12th position and worked his way into the top 10 on lap 24. Allgaier made his way to the ninth position on lap 48, before coming down pit road on lap 50 for a scheduled green-flag pit stop. Crew chief Scott Zipadelli made the call for fuel, four tires and an air-pressure adjustment. While waiting for green-flag pit stops to cycle through, the first caution of the race came out for an accident on the frontstretch, which Allgaier narrowly avoided. After taking evasive action to avoid the accident, Allgaier collected grass and dirt on the grille. After the caution put him one lap down, Allgaier was the beneficiary of the free pass and put back on the lead lap. Zipadelli brought Allgaier down pit road to clean the grille, pull a windshield tear-off and fill the BRANDT Camaro full of Sunoco fuel. Allgaier restarted 15th on lap 60 and was in the 13th position on lap 66 when the second caution came out for an accident in Turn 4. Allgaier radioed into Zipadelli that his car was too edgy to run the top line, but felt good on the bottom of the track.

On lap 76, Allgaier restarted in the 13th position, and was in the 14th position when the third caution came out at lap 88. Allgaier relayed to Zipadelli that he needed rear grip. Allgaier came down pit road for fuel, four tires and a track-bar adjustment. After restarting 13th on lap 94, Allgaier worked his way up to the 11th position. On lap 113, the fourth caution of the race came out and Allgaier radioed in that his BRANDT Chevy needed to be freed up. Allgaier came down pit road for two right-side tires, fuel and a track-bar adjustment. He restarted 11th on lap 117, and was ninth on lap 139 when he reported his car was tight mid-corner and out. As the green-flag laps continued, Allgaier worked his way up to the fifth position when the final caution of the race came out at lap 157. Zipadelli called Allgaier down pit road for fuel, four tires and no adjustments. He restarted in the sixth position on lap 163. Allgaier managed to stay in the top 10 during the long green-flag run and brought the No. 31 BRANDT Chevrolet home in the sixth position. Allgaier moved into the fourth position in the NNS Driver Point Standings.

"We had a good night in the No. 31 BRANDT Chevy," said Allgaier. "My crew guys worked really, really hard this weekend. We were consistent in practice, but our times were mediocre. They worked really hard to come up with a plan for qualifying and it worked. This is the same chassis we had last weekend at Kansas [Speedway] and finished fifth with, and it proved itself again tonight. We moved up a position in the points and finished sixth in the race. Overall, it was a good night. I'm ready to go racing next weekend, but the series takes two weeks off. It gives everyone a chance to re-group and get ready for the remaining three races of the season."

The NNS takes two weeks off and returns at Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday, November 2 for 200 laps of racing in the O'Reilly Auto Parts Challenge. Television coverage begins at 3:30 p.m. EDT with NNS Countdown on ESPN2. Next weekend, Allgaier will be at Talladega Superspeedway to race the No. 51 BRANDT SS in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Sunday, October 20. Television coverage for the Camping World RV Sales 500 begins at 2:00 p.m. EDT on ESPN.
