Nik, Lijana Wallenda Complete High Wire Thrill Show

Pit Note #12

DUO CONQUERS CHARLOTTE TREK – Nik and Lijana Wallenda agree that the hardest part of the 460-foot trek across the track on a wire nearly 150 feet above the track wasn’t the walk itself but the wait prior to it.

But it wasn’t obvious to anyone watching the duo, who are descended from the famous Flying Wallendas tightrope-walking family. They navigated the 5/8-inch tightrope with ease, starting on opposite sides and crossing in the middle, as Lijana crouched on one leg and Nik eased over the top of her.

“It was exciting to perform together again,” said Wallenda, who crossed the track before last fall’s Bank of America 500 and is well known for solo walks over the Grand Canyon and Niagara Falls. “We don’t perform like this very often. We’ve never performed this high and this far apart before and this was the first time in many, many years.”

Nik Wallenda said his crew has already told him to start thinking up a new walk before next year’s race, because they love performing for the NASCAR fans in Charlotte.

“It’s always exciting to perform in front of race fans, for one, because they’re such an outgoing audience,” Wallenda said. “And to have them so quiet while we perform … there’s a lot of respect there.”

ACTUALLY, IT’S EASY BEING GREEN – Coca-Cola continued its many “green” initiatives this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway, including some fun new ways for race fans to get involved.

In addition to the approximately 675 recycling bins at the speedway this weekend, recycling bags were handed out in select campgrounds, and the REV (Recycling Education Vehicle) was in the Fan Zone all weekend with a new interactive element.

The REV features videos and interactive games and displays, as well as a “paparazzi” feature that allows fans to have their photos taken and dropped into a photo with a member of the Coca-Cola Racing Family. After the race, fans can go online to view the composite photo and download, print and share it.
