2013 NHRA: Arana Snares No 3 Qualifying Spot As He Guns For First Career Victory

ProtectTheHarvest.com/MAVTV rider Adam Arana was still excited for the NHRA Toyota Nationals on Saturday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway despite losing his provisional Pro Stock Motorcycle No. 1 qualifier to his dad.

Arana ended up No. 3 in the qualifying order, his best qualifying spot since winning the pole in Denver.

"I did lose No. 1," Arana said. "My dad took it away from me, and Steve Johnson also got ahead of me. Steve's been at it a long time and so has my dad, so I guess those old-timers know a little more than I do."

Arana had a top lap of 6.946 seconds at 192.71 mph, and the rookie hopes to bolster his chances for the Auto Club Road to the Future Award as NHRA's top rookie in the final two races. Arana is the front-runner for the award because he's the only rookie to qualify for the Countdown to the Championship.

"I'm happy with the weekend," Arana said. "It's an improvement from the last race. I'm comfortable on the bike and I'm ready to go rounds."

Arana has worked on his starting-line procedure this weekend after a chat with four-time Pro Stock champion Jeg Coughlin Jr., and he appears more relaxed on the Christmas Tree as he tries to narrow his focus.

"I'm definitely confident," Arana said. "I'm having fun again. This weekend has been pretty stress-free and we're having fun. We're goofing off in the staging lanes, dressing up for Q4. This is what racing should be. When you're having fun, things seem to click, and now they're clicking."

Arana and his three-bike team dressed up in Halloween costumes for the final qualifying session, continuing a tradition in the class. Arana sported oversized glasses before his run, and his girlfriend Jessica Outten wore an old uniform of Arana's father Hector Sr. as she helped line up Arana for Q4.

Arana will face Katie Sullivan in the first round. Sullivan qualified No. 14 with a pass of 7.025 seconds at 190.62 mph.

"We definitely have a great chance of getting into the winner's circle tomorrow," Arana said.

Eliminations for the NHRA Toyota Nationals get under way at 11 a.m. PDT on Sunday from The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. ESPN2 will broadcast the eliminations show at 8 p.m. EDT on Sunday.
