2013 NHRA: Ron Capps NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway Event Recap: Second Round
Ron Capps wanted to head home to his backyard racetrack at Pomona, Calif., in two weeks with a chance to win his first NHRA Funny Car world championship.
But that dream will have to wait another year after his NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger R/T team lost in the second round of eliminations Sunday in the NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and John Force went on to clinch the Funny Car championship by winning the event title.
The consolation for Capps, however, is that his team didn't lose but were beaten by the better car on that specific run.
"Earlier in the season we were winning a lot of close races and coming out on top," he said. "Since the Countdown (to the Championship started in September at Charlotte) this is the third event when we lost by a very close margin. In one respect, everybody is going up there to race us hard because they know how good our NAPA Dodge can be with (crew chief Rahn) Tobler calling the shots."
After winning in the first round, Capps didn't have lane choice against Alexis DeJoria and she opted for the quicker right lane. Capps produced a time of 4.132 seconds at 304.39 mph but DeJoria was quicker with a 4.126 (304.39).
"I'm proud of Rahn and the guys for being able to go down that left lane with a good time," Capps said. "We were the only car that went down that lane under power in the second round, and we put up a good (elapsed time). We ran better than a couple cars did in the right lane. The right lane here definitely is better for Funny Cars.
"We didn't go out and make a mistake, we just got beat on that run."
The following are Capps' results from the NHRA Nationals at Las Vegas Motor Speedway:
