Gleason Boys Win 13-Hour Enduro at VIR

The Gleason boys combined forces to compete in a 13-hour sports car endurance race last weekend in Virginia and came home as the winners!

Chris Gleason of Johnstown, Pa., and his two sons, Chris Gleason Jr. of Wayne, Pa. and Kevin Gleason, also of Johnstown, drove a Mazda MX-5 to victory in the "Charge of the Headlight Brigade," a 13-hour endurance race hosted by the North Carolina region of the Sports Car Club of America. It was held at VIRginia International Raceway, a 3.27-mile road course near the Virginia/North Carolina state line. The race started at 9:15 a.m. Saturday and ended at 10:15 p.m. Saturday night.

The competition was intense, and the Gleasons' entry didn't take the lead for good in the STU (World Challenge Touring Car-based) class until the last five laps of the race.

"We had to change the transmission around halfway, and at that point I thought it was over for us," Chris Gleason said. "Our car was fielded by the Atlanta Motorsports Group, and they have a lot of experience in this kind of racing. They won at the 25 Hours of Thunderhill last year. Anyway, they changed the transmission in 12 minutes. Kevin did the last three hours of the race and he was able to close the deal.

"Like all endurance races, our first goal was to finish," he said. "We all passed a lot of guys, and some other teams had problems too. At the end we had one particular team we had to chase down, but the Gleason guys prevailed.

"Winning a race with your sons is really special," added Gleason, a sports car veteran who was inducted into the Cambria County Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.

Kevin Gleason, who ran a limited schedule in the Grand-Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge series this year, qualified the car in tenth place out of 59 entries on Friday.
