NASCAR Number (Oct. 29, 2013)

By Reid Spencer, NASCAR Wire Service

1: The previous closest points differential with three races remaining in a season since the points-per-position format was established in 1975. In Oct. 1996, Jeff Gordon held a one-point advantage over Terry Labonte leaving Charlotte Motor Speedway with three races to go. By season’s end, however, the table had flipped with Labonte capturing his second NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship by 37 points over Gordon. The record was broken this past weekend at Martinsville when Matt Kenseth finished second, tying him with Jimmie Johnson atop the points standings with three races remaining. (Note: NASCAR went to the current one-point-per-position format in 2011.)
