Mason Mingus; Win-Tron Racing Inhale Phoenix Experience

A top-25 finish in Friday night’s Lucas Oil 150 at Phoenix (Ariz.) International Raceway wasn’t exactly what Mason Mingus and his Win-Tron Racing had in mind for their second NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start of the season. However, the experience the team inhaled in the penultimate race of the season gives them some motivation for Homestead-Miami (Fla.) Speedway.

Never seeing the 1.0-mile oval before Thursday’s dual practice sessions, the Brentwood, Tennessee native took full advantage of the open-track time to not only educate himself about the track, but also give his Mooresville, North Carolina-based team some feedback about the Chevrolet bow-tie.

Placing 23rd in the first practice session, the team was able to find more speed out of their No. 35 Call 811 Before You Dig / Mark-It! Madness Chevrolet Silverado in the final practice run of the night, but only recorded the 27th fastest time.

In qualifying on Friday afternoon, the rookie driver admitted that he left some speed on the table, but he did maneuver his quickest lap of the weekend, giving himself confidence heading into his second NCWTS race of the season.

Mingus, the runner-up in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards championship point standings, struggled with the handling of his No. 35 Call 811 Before You Dig / Mark-It! Madness Chevrolet Silverado, but as the race progressed, the team led by Mark Rette, made huge strides, which ultimately led to a respectable 22nd place finish at PIR, just one lap behind winner Erik Jones.

“I’m not very happy with our performance at Phoenix,” offered Mingus. “I thought we were much more capable of a better finish than what we showed. Despite that though, I was able to get a feel for the trucks and how they react to different changes and lines throughout the race, so there are some positives.

“Hopefully, having that seat time and getting to feel those things will carry over to Homestead next and we can have a stronger run there. Phoenix was very unique track, it had a lot of tough characteristics to it, but it was a very cool place to run and I just want to thank the guys on the team for their hard work and of course, thanks to Call 811 Before You Dig and Mark-It! Madness for making the opportunity possible.”

Nate Thiesse, co-truck owner of Win-Tron Racing commended his driver on the performance at PIR.

“I know the finish wasn’t what Mason or the team had hoped for, but we made some big gains from the start of the weekend and that’s encouraging for all of us moving forward. It’s a big leap from ARCA to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, but he (Mason) is getting the hang of these trucks and we’ll take what we learned at Phoenix and try to apply it to Homestead as hope for a better run there.”

The team will compete in the season-finale for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series this upcoming Friday night at Homestead-Miami (Fla.) Speedway for the running of the Ford 200 at the 1.5-mile oval in The Sunshine State.

Mason Mingus has 34 ARCA Racing Series races to his credit. During that tenure, he has acquired five top-fives and 25 top-10 finishes, including second-place runs at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, Toledo Speedway and Berlin (Mich.) Raceway in August 2013. Additionally, two pole runs at Mobile (Ala.) International Speedway (March 2013) and Iowa Speedway (September 2013), is his best time trials effort to date.
