Porsche 911 GT America Makes Official Debut at TUDOR United SportsCar Championship Testing

Even though over a month remains in calendar year 2013, the Porsche customer teams have already begun the 2014 race season. Nine of the new customer Porsche 911 GT America racecars traveled to Sebring International Raceway and Daytona International Speedway for four days of pre-season testing this week. The official test dates, November 16-17 in Sebring, Fla. and 19-20 in Daytona Beach, Fla., provided the private programs their first taste of the cars that will compete in the GT Daytona class of the new TUDOR United SportsCar Championship.

Participating in testing over the course of the four days were double entries from Alex Job Racing and Muehlner Motorsports America. Konrad Motorsport, NGT Motorsport, Horton Autosport and Magnus Racing tested single car programs. The new combination of several veteran teams, Snow Racing/Wright Motorsports/JDX, came only to Daytona with their 911 GT America.

“It is always advantageous for our customers to test new cars on relevant tracks. It gives them and PMNA an opportunity to maximize assets and compile far more data than in individual tests,” offered Porsche Motorsport North America president and CEO Jens Walther. “After four days of running on two very different circuits, the teams have learned quite a lot about the new Porsche 911 GT America and that is the objective of a test like this. We are pleased with the experience the teams have acquired and the additional information we have accumulated.”

While based on the current generation Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car, the GT America is unique in many details and untried by most of the TUDOR Championship teams. The car was exclusively developed by Porsche for the TUDOR GT Daytona class. Therefore, this first test took on even greater importance as teams studied what makes the new car quick and consistent. The multi-car teams benefited from a “divide and conquer” approach allowing one car to test a certain feature while the other took a different approach. The result is a greatly reduced learning curve.

“We have found there is a big advantage in having two new Porsche GT America racecars when it came to testing this week at Sebring and Daytona,” commented veteran Porsche entrant Alex Job of Alex Job Racing. “We have been able to try different set-up approaches simultaneously and then judge which one works better. This means we can get results twice as fast, giving us more time to experiment with alternative settings or get on to the next item on our test agenda faster.”

The two tracks used for this first official activity of the new TUDOR Championship – the combination of the GRAND-AM Rolex and American Le Mans Series – are also the first two rounds of the 2014 season. The 52nd Annual Rolex 24 At Daytona will open the year on January 25-26while the 62nd running of the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring will take place on March 15.

While individual teams may undertake private testing in the month of December, the next official activity will come at the annual “Roar Before the Rolex 24” at Daytona. The three-day open test is scheduled for January 3-5 and will provide an even clearer picture to what the new year will hold. Expected to join the GT Daytona class customer teams for the first time at “The Roar” will be Porsche North America’s official factory team. The “works” effort will campaign a pair of Porsche 911 RSRs in the GT Le Mans category for the 12-race season.
