From Lights to the Christmas Village and Driving the Track, Fans Can’t Get Enough of Speedway Christmas

Visitors looking to get into the holiday spirit are finding plenty of family fun at the fourth annual Speedway Christmas light show at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Open nightly through Dec. 30, except Christmas day, the drive-through course features more than 3 million lights in 800 displays along the 3.1-mile route. During opening week, thousands of visitors weaved through the infield past popular light displays like the Abominable Snowman, Racing Santa and Patriotic Alley before taking in the fan-favorite lights-to-music display in the frontstretch grandstands.

Speedway Christmas is fun for the whole family according to Sarah Jones of Cleveland, Tenn. “Speedway Christmas is worth every penny. We could not have had a better evening with our grandsons than we did here.”

But it’s not just the lights that fans are raving about. In the bustling infield Christmas village – open every Thursday through Sunday night during the show – visitors can have their photo taken with Santa, sponsored by Cricket, ride in bumper cars or stop by the Bojangles’ petting zoo. There are pony and camel rides, marshmallow roasting and even a horse-drawn carriage. In addition, holiday classics like “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and “A Christmas Story” will be played on the world’s largest HDTV every Friday and Saturday night. This weekend, visitors can enjoy “Christmas Vacation” beginning at 7 p.m. both nights.

As part of the drive-through course, visitors get the unique opportunity to drive more than one mile on the famed superspeedway, including a trek down pit road, through turns 1 and 2, and down the backstretch.

“We absolutely loved it,” said Alexis Gillespie of Charlotte, N.C. who brought her husband and 5-year-old son to Speedway Christmas. “We were amazed at all the lights and stopped by Santa's village so our son could meet Santa! Also, driving on the race track on the way home was awesome.”

For Chris McCord and her family, their first trip to Charlotte Motor Speedway’s spectacular light show was a memorable one, but it certainly won’t be their last visit.

“This was our first year at Speedway Christmas and our grandkids had a great time,” said McCord, of Hayesville, N.C. “We now have a new tradition even though it is almost four hours from home.”

Speedway Christmas is open nightly through Dec. 30 from 6-10 p.m., and is closed Christmas Day. Admission to Speedway Christmas is $15 per car on Monday-Wednesday (nights the village is closed) and $20 per car on Thursday-Sunday (nights the village is open). Group rates for tour buses and corporate sponsorship opportunities are also available.
