Dan Cammish Wins Prestigious Autosport And BRDC Awards

2013 Formula Ford Champion Dan Cammish has added two prestigious motorsport awards to his record breaking 2013 tally after collecting trophies at the Autosport and BRDC (British Racing Drivers’ Club) annual awards.

Leeds-based Cammish beat off tough competition in the public vote to be named Autosport British Club Driver of the Year at the Autosport annual awards ceremony on Sunday night (1 December) where he was presented the prominent trophy by Lotus Formula 1 driver Romain Grosjean.

Dan’s award puts him in stellar company with previous winners of the Autosport Club Driver trophy including Allan McNish, David Coulthard, Dario Franchitti, Andy Priaulx, Eddie Irvine and Lewis Hamilton.

“I never thought for a minute that I’d win the Autosport Club Driver of the Year as I was up against some really great drivers,” Cammish said. “I was completely shell shocked when they called my name out, I think it was the most nervous I’ve ever felt. Standing up there in front of the likes of Niki Lauda and Sebastian Vettel was unbelievable and I’d like to say a big thanks to everyone that voted for me.”

Less than 24 hours later Dan was back up on stage with Formula 1 legend John Surtees OBE presenting the 24 year old with the Henry Surtees Award for ‘most outstanding performance of a BRDC Rising Star’ at the BRDC’s glittering annual awards ceremony.

“It’s been an amazing week!” Cammish added. “I went from mopping the floors at work last Friday night to standing in front of a room full of motorsport legends applauding me on stage! I feel incredibly privileged to have had such an amazing experience, seeing so many of my heroes in front of me was a very special moment that I’ll remember forever.”

The Autosport and BRDC trophies are the fitting end to an incredible season for Dan that saw the 24 year old break all records in the 2013 Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain, amassing 24 out of 24 race wins, 22 pole positions and 19 new lap records along the way to claiming the title.

“It’s a great reward for all of the hard work that went into this season and the sacrifices that my family have made to help me to get there. I’m very grateful for their ongoing support and also very thankful to the BRDC for their support through the BRDC Rising Star programme.”

With all of his efforts fully focussed on making the step up to join the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship grid in 2014, Dan is more determined than ever to make the grade adding: “I am going to work hard to be back here next year. I’d love to step up to touring cars next year: I have worked hard my whole career to have my shot and I think I’m worthy of it.”

“We’re working incredibly hard behind the scenes to make it happen and I think if I can have my shot in the BTCC this coming season I would consider that a massive achievement because for a normal lad from Leeds to get as far as I have has already been something special.”
