Report: SWS RX7 and LR4 Sprint Races at the Kartdrome

The penultimate round of the the 2013 SWS RX7 Sprint Series took place at Dubai Kartdrome on Wednesday 11 December 2013 and delivered some of the closest racing so far this season, with Atef Al Barwani and Ali Al Mansoori taking wins in the senior division and Denis Bahar doing the double in the junior category, with trophies for best rookies going to two lady drivers on the night.

Qualifying gave an early indication of how tight the contest would be among the 35 SWS RX7 Sprint drivers, as the top ten were separated by a mere second, and just two seconds between the top time and the 21st best time. Pole position went to Sachin Kumar who scorched around in a best time of 1:12.020, which was only 0.023 up on second best Al Mansoori.

In Race 1, Al Mansoori was too good as he powered to victory by nearly four seconds, with Al Barwani runner-up after starting fourth on the grid. Russian visitor Dudarev Aleksandr impressed on his way to third, ahead of Sky Dive Dubai Falcons driver Hadi Al Baloushi in fourth and Hussain Umid Ali fifth.

Al Barwani had the bit between his teeth thereafter, slugging it out with Al Mansoori in Race 2 before taking the victory by the narrowest of margins – 0.362 of a second to be precise – with Al Mansoori second. Umid Ali took third place after a race long duel with Saeed Al Falasi who crossed the line fourth. Aleksey Mishukov was fifth.

Race 3 victory also went to Al Barwani, this time he was made to work hard by Marwan Al Hamoudi who was second, followed by Al Mansoori who finished third after fending off Saeed Al Falasi (fourth) and Konstantin Ilin (fifth) – the trio crossing the line within a tenth of a second of a second.

Rookie of the Race award went to lady racer Abi Birch whose best result was sixth place in Race 1, impressive considering the 35 driver grid included a dozen of the country’s top SWS karters.

Earlier in the evening Denis Bahar dominated SWS LR4 Sprint races. The youngster took pole position in qualifying, then powered to victory in both races and setting the fastest lap of the night in the junior category in the process.

Chasing Bahar hard all evening, and leading for most of Race 1, was Mansour Al Sarraj who finished second in the two races.
Diminutive Samir Malas, the youngest and smallest driver in the field of 14, again impressed taking a comfortable third in Race 1, ahead of fourth placed Samuel Garbutt and Omar Alami in fifth.

In Race 2, behind Bahar and Sarraj was Garbutt in third with Freddie Barker fourth and Alex Connor fifth.

Girl racer Logan Hannah was deserving winner of the junior Rookie of the Race award, making it a clean sweep for rookie lady drivers on the night.

The final race night of the 2013 SWS Sprint Series, which counts towards the SWS World Ranking, takes place at the Kartdrome on 22 December 2103.
