Countdown To Daytona: 53 Days To Go

By Reid Spencer, NASCAR Wire Service

There are 53 days remaining before the 2014 Daytona 500. Hence the number for today is:

53: The number of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victories recorded by cars bearing the No. 9. Brothers Herb and Donald Thomas each won a race in 1952 driving a No. 9 Hudson Hornet. Herb Thomas actually took the checkered flag in both instances, but the second win was in relief of his brother (after Herb’s own car fell out of the race). The No. 9 would have to wait 31 years for its third trip to Victory Lane, with Bill Elliott behind the wheel at Riverside in 1983. Most recently, Marcos Ambrose drove a No. 9 Ford to victory for Richard Petty Motorsports, winning back-to-back road-course races at Watkins Glen in 2011 and 2012.
