Burton Racing Opens 2014 Season With Successful Test at Daytona

In spite of some greatly varying weather and track conditions, defending IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge Champions Burton Racing completed a successful and productive test this weekend at the annual Roar Before the 24 at the famous Daytona International Speedway to kick off the 2014 season.

With Burton Racing veterans and 2013 Continental Tire Challenge ST champions Terry Borcheller and Mike LaMarra returning to the wheel of the No. 23 Burton Racing entry, and team newcomers Greg Strelzoff and Connor Bloum piloting the No. 22 entry, the weekend saw both BMW 128i machines consistently running at the sharp end of the timing sheets through six sessions during the three day test weekend.

Friday’s first practice saw the crew bundled up to weather the decidedly “un-Floridian” 30-degree temperatures and blustery winds. However, the uncharacteristic conditions proved no problem to the Burton drivers as the session closed with the No. 22 machine scoring the third quickest time of the session, while the No. 23 entry was just behind in fourth.

This consistent performance between team entries reflected the preparation the team has made to continually improve during the offseason as it prepares for an IMSA season that will see the team visit several new tracks during an expanded schedule for the 2014 Championship.

As the weather warmed, the weekend continued to be successful for the Burton crew, and reliability proved to be the key as the team consistently completed sessions in the top-five, never falling out of the top-10 of the nearly 20 car ST-Class field.
"It is nice that our cars have been really consistent in spite of the range in weather and temperature this weekend," said Keith Burton, team manager for Burton Racing. “From a chilly morning to a moderate afternoon in the car, we have not only been pretty stable but we actually seem to be getting better so that is great.

"All of the drivers are doing really well,” said Burton of the team dynamic and their progress at the Roar. “Connor and Greg are just getting used to the system and they are quite happy. They are just taking and building that relationship with Peter (Hansel, engineer). It's been great. The Atlanta test was a great opportunity to get them kind of settled in the car and now we have been able to make some real progress here at Daytona. Now we are just thinking about taking care of the equipment and getting ready for the race rather than just raw speed."

So with a productive and successful test at the Daytona International Speedway, the Burton Racing team heads home to make the final preparations in the next two weeks, looking forward to grabbing a podium spot in the fabled season-opener at the Rolex 24 on January 25 & 26.
