Historic Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak No. 2 to Cross the Block at Mecum Auction
Super Stock drag racing champion Larry Griffith’s 2009 Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak No. 2, only the second race car to be produced in the Mopar brand’s modern-day revival of its legendary factory-backed package car program, will be among 3,000 high-performance muscle cars and collector-interest vehicles up for auction at the Mecum Collector Car Auction in Kissimmee, Fla., January 17 - 26. Griffith will drive his Drag Pak across the Mecum Auction block on Friday, January 24.

Chrysler produced limited-edition Dodge Dart and Plymouth Barracuda package cars in 1968, equipped with special high-performance parts. The Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak program introduced the first drag-race, factory-prepped Mopar package cars built in 40 years, with Griffith taking ownership of the No. 2 Drag Pak. Griffith’s rare race machine is in good company — Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak No. 1 currently resides in the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing in Ocala, Fla. The inner trunk lid of Griffith's vehicle is autographed by a who’s who from the Mopar racing world.

"It’s very exciting to have the Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak No. 2 included in the Mecum Auction," said Griffith. "There are so many amazing, historic vehicles that will be part of this auction, and the Drag Pak is also a landmark vehicle that will be of great interest to collectors."

Griffith, who earned three straight United Drag Racers Association (UDRA) Super Stock championships from 1968-1970, outfitted the Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak No. 2 with graphics similar to those carried on the 1968 Super Stock HEMI Dodge Dart he campaigned to UDRA titles. With racer Charlie Fitzsimmons at the wheel, the Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak No. 2 also claimed trophies at the drag strip, earning the class elimination and Stock eliminator victory at the 2012 NHRA Gatornationals. The vehicle carries a special Mopar National event winner decal, and will be auctioned along with the NHRA Gatornationals Wally Trophy.

Griffith’s rare Drag Pak, which is powered by a 5.7L HEMI engine built by Arrington Performance, has been featured in automotive enthusiast magazines and displayed in the Chrysler Group exhibit at the Woodward Dream Cruise, as well as at many other major events, including the NHRA U.S. Nationals. The documented production and build includes the only known Drag Pak equipped with Holley Dominator fuel injection, a roll cage installed by Chassis Concepts, a Dana rear end from Strange Engineering and automatic transmission for NHRA competition — the vehicle comes ready to race.

"This car is an important part of motorsports history," said Griffith, who along with partner Larry Pontnack has already begun building another Dodge Challenger race car. "There is an interest for these cars, and we believe this is the first complete Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak car to come to auction. We’ve had a lot of fun with this project and now we’ve decided it should go out with a bang, and there’s no better place than the Mecum Auction."

Coverage of the Mecum Collector Car Auction in Kissimmee, Fla., will be broadcast on the NBC Sports and Esquire networks, with a one-hour special broadcast scheduled to air on NBC.
