Watching the Time at Daytona

Performance Tech Motorsports has spent its time fine-tuning the No. 38 Prototype Challenge (PC) car for the inaugural event of the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship in hopes of earning its first win of the season and a new Rolex courtesy of the 52nd anniversary Rolex 24 at Daytona.

The ORECA-FLM09 machine will be primed for competition the moment it is unloaded from the transporter, perfected to handle the 3.56-mile road course that seemingly rises from the sand of Florida's Atlantic coastline. The 12-turn course offers high banking and heart pounding adrenaline to drivers, while the schedule itself offers little time to learn the ins and outs of the famous track.

With only 90 minutes of practice prior to qualifying and one hour of practice prior to the race, the team will not have the luxury of time to make any dramatic changes. This is no surprise to Team Principal Brent O'Neill who has experience as a driver in the Rolex 24. He knows Daytona leaves no time for number crunching and that the team must arrive prepared.

"You have to be ready to race when you unload at Daytona," O'Neill said. "We will be ready for the fight, and with our driver lineup we are pretty excited about the race. We know the key is to just make sure each driver keeps the car on track and out of the pits."

2014_Daytona_Roar_TUSCC_0110The starting lineup for the Performance Tech No. 38 Dash Neighborhoods/Phillips 66 entry will include Tomy Drissi, Julio Campos, Gabriel Casagrande, past Rolex 24 winner and IndyCar veteran Rafael Matos and filling in for the fifth position will be David Ostella.

Matos won the GT class in 2008 at the Rolex 24 and took ninth overall in 2009. The Brazilian's know-how has helped create a winning chemistry between the team and drivers. That knowledge will also come into play as he helps the team, as Matos put it, "survive."

"The first 22 hours are about saving the car and staying on pace," Matos said. "The last two, if we have a car to compete, are a fight. I feel that I have the most experience in this race of the drivers. Taking that experience and building confidence and getting that into the other drivers' heads will build the dynamics of the team.

Performance Tech as a team has a lot of experience. They ran an entire season last year and won a race, so everyone has more experience coming into 2014. I think overall that makes us a much better package and I'm honored to be driving with them again."

To watch the green flag drop tune in to Fox at 2 p.m. ET Saturday, Jan. 25 for live coverage until 4 p.m. ET when coverage switches to Fox Sports 2 until 9 p.m. ET. IMSA.com will live stream the race overnight from 9 p.m. - 7 a.m. ET before broadcast coverage resumes for the remainder of the 24-hour race from 7 a.m. - 3 p.m. ET Sunday, Jan. 26.
