Vance Makes Mark, Finishes Fifth In St Class At Daytona

James Vance made an impression at the inaugural BMW Performance 200 on Friday, Jan. 24 at Daytona International Speedway, advancing 13 positions during his stint to finish fifth in the ST class in the No. 50 Bionic Environments/ ExpoSystems USA Porsche Cayman.

Vance jumped behind the wheel of the No. 50 for his first start in the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge with Berg Racing after team owner John Weisberg drove the first hour of the two-hour, 30-minute race.

Weisberg, who qualified 20th Thursday, climbed to 12th before pitting to put Vance behind the wheel. A problem during the driver change dropped Vance to 18th when he entered the track.

Vance1Toronto-area resident Vance settled into a smooth, quick race pace, passing many cars. Numerous caution periods also broke in Vance's favor during the incident-laden race, which featured just 29 of 54 laps under green.

Vance continued to climb through the field, steering clear of trouble and bringing home the team's Porsche in fifth on the 3.56-mile circuit.

"The race was kind of unpredictable," Vance said. "We only changed two tires instead of all four to save time, and it kind of backfired on us, actually. Once we got out there, we were under yellow for quite a bit, and at one point we had one green lap between yellows. The car was amazing. We had fastest lap until the second-to-last green lap, which is pretty cool. But for my first race in this series to make clean and assertive passes and kind of make my mark was awesome. It was great to make top five."Vance2

Vance made his mark in a historic event. The BMW Performance 200 was the inaugural event of the series under International Motor Sport Association (IMSA) sanction. This change came with the creation of the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship after the merger of GRAND-AM and the American Le Mans Series.

The next race for Vance and the No. 50 Bionic Environments/ ExpoSystems USA Porsche Cayman is March 13-14 at Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, Fla.
