Violent Crash Sidelines Pole-Winning Prototype At Rolex 24

By Reid Spencer, NASCAR Wire Service

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Just before the three-hour mark Saturday in the 52nd Rolex 24 At Daytona, a violent crash disabled the pole-winning Prototype and sent the two drivers involved to a nearby hospital.

The No. 62 GT Le Mans Ferrari of Matteo Malucelli slowed on the infield portion of the 3.56-mile road course in the kink following the International Horseshoe, a section of the course facing the afternoon sun.

Memo Gidley, driving the pole-winning No. 99 GAINSCO Corvette DP, slammed into the Ferrari, which was rolling slowly to driver's left, knocking Malucelli's car into a tire barrier and leaving the crippled Daytona Prototype sitting in the middle of the track.

The race was red-flagged, and both drivers were transported to Halifax Health Medical Center. Both were admitted to the hospital for further observation and assessment and were described by IMSA officials as "awake and communicating."
