Rolex 24 Daytona - Early Race Notes

Scott Dixon, Ganassi Racing 02 Ford EcoBoost Riley (in media center after coming out with the lead):

TAKE US THROUGH YOUR FIRST STINT AND HOW THINGS ARE WORKING WITH THAT NEW ECOBOOST ENGINE?

"Yeah, it’s going pretty good. We had a lot of action right in front of me. The pace is a little slow than I thought it would be from the other people. Our car seemed to maintain pretty well over the stint. We had to work a little harder than we probably would like to to get the distance. There’s a lot of changes going on with the team, aerodynamically and of course the change to Ford. I’ve been impressed with them and have liked working with them.

"I wasn’t here for the Roar, but had a couple days testing with them in December and a couple days here before the race. It’s just tough coming with a new package to the first race of the year. This team does well under pressure, and does well in situations like that. We’re going to try and keep our nose clean and keep it on the track."

COMING HERE AS A CHAMPION, AND RACING AGAINST OTHER CHAMPIONS:

"It’s a lot of fun. We see huge depth in the field, and it’s kind of cool because there’s a whole social part of it where you get out of the car and have time to catch up with other drivers you raced against in your junior careers, and some that are in different categories. It’s great to see so many big names here. It’s huge for the championship and the series. Even going out to the grid today it was packed. A lot of people coming out to see these two series merge and all these great drivers and teams. It’s always fun to race people you look up to, or that you’ve had great fights with on track in other series. A lot of time you’re on the radio asking, ‘who’s in that car, or who’s in that car?’ No matter if they’re racing well, or did something you didn’t like."

EXPECTED STRUGGLES, BUT STILL IN THE LEAD:

"I was kind of surprised, but it’s only been the first two hours, so we have to see how we do through the night and then see where you are. As I said, we started with a very short transition, and there’s been some situation where it probably hasn’t been the best part. But we have tried to dig deep and get past them. The team has done a very good job with Ford. I still go back to straight up speed and maybe we don’t have it. But for looking after the tires in one stint it’s been very consistent. "

ON KYLE LARSON:

"Kyle doesn’t talk much. He’s a smart kid who is obviously very talented, and I’ve had some of my best nights at the Chili Bowl watching him. It’s great to pal around with him and TK and Marino too. But for his first time… and I don’t know how many road courses he has done… probably not many… probably in the single digits… he’s adapted very quickly. He’s a quick learner and doesn’t complain much. He’ll put on a great show when he gets in the car. Looking forward to seeing his big future."
