Al Nabooda Racing Stay On Course For New Porsche GT3 Cup Title Triumph

Al Nabooda Racing will steer clear of any change in tactics as they look to clinch a second successive team title in the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East after dominating the first half of the 2013-14 season.

With six of 12 rounds completed, the defending champions from Dubai hold a commanding 38-point lead in the team title race, and the pairing of Clemens Schmid and Karim Al Azhari return to action at Qatar’s Losail International Circuit this weekend brimming with confidence.

At the same stage last season, the Al Nabooda Racing duo held a strong but less emphatic 20-point cushion over the Saudi Falcons, who are their closest challengers again in a championship which has reached a new level in terms of overall competitiveness this term.

“The competition this season is particularly fierce, and it’s taken a tremendous performance from Clemens and Karim to give us such a big advantage at the half way point,” said Team Manager Vijay Rao.

“We said when we entered a two-car team for the first time two years ago that it was important to have drivers capable of winning races, and who combine well, on and off the circuit.

“Clemens and Karim have a formed a superb partnership. They support each other and drive for the team, not just for themselves. We want to win races, but at the same time we don’t want to throw away points.

“Our strategy brought us the title last season and it’s working even better this time, so there is no need to change anything.”

While defending individual champion Schmid has again been the centre of attention, winning four of the first six rounds and finishing runner-up in the other two to open up a 27-point cushion, Al Azhari has produced a string of tenacious performances to contribute vital team points.

“Clemens takes most of the spotlight, but he’s the first to recognise the key role played by Karim who has come under a lot of extra pressure this season and responded so well,” said Rao.

“The new GT3 Cup car being much easier to drive has closed the gap between a lot of the drivers, and Karim has worked very hard to hold his race position and win valuable points for the team.”

The two Al Nabooda Racing Porsches return to the Losail circuit for four official one-hour test sessions on Thursday when Schmid and Al Azhari will be working with their engineers to get the best set-up for Rounds 7 and 8 of the series to follow on Friday and Saturday nights.
