Motor Racing Network – “The Voice of NASCAR” – has been honored by the National Motorsports Press Association (NMPA) with five awards for radio excellence in 2013, including first place in the Live Event Broadcast category.

MRN’s race coverage of David Ragan’s upset victory in the Sprint Cup Series event at Talladega Superspeedway in May of last year earned top honors. The entry was titled “David vs. Goliath.” MRN President and Executive Producer David Hyatt accepted the award, one of three first-place entries that were submitted by the network and recognized Sunday as the NMPA’s annual convention concluded.

Ken Squier and producer Darrell Smith won top honors in Event-oriented Feature Radio for the pre-season special, “Daytona 500: Turn of the Tide,” a look back at some of the most memorable moments from “The Great American Race.”

In Topic-oriented Feature Radio, MRN.com’s “Straight Line” – a weekly pass through the world of NHRA drag racing – was awarded first place with co-hosts Marty Hough and Doug Herbert, and producer Craig Moore. The show will open its third season on Feb. 12 as part of Motor Racing Network’s lineup of exclusive online content, airing each Wednesday from 12 to 1 p.m. (EST).

Joe Moore and producer Brian Nelson took third place in Topic-oriented Feature Radio for “Ned Jarrett’s World of Racing,” a weekly production of the network. And second place in Radio Spot News went to MRN’s Dave Moody for his report on Juan Pablo Montoya leaving Earnhardt Ganassi Racing, which aired on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

“I’ve always maintained that we have the best team in motor sports,” Hyatt said. “These awards reflect that. The passion, commitment and dedication of these broadcast professionals – and everyone at the Motor Racing Network who supports their efforts – give us a tremendous source of pride heading into our 45th year.”

Motor Racing Network launched this year’s broadcast schedule with flag-to-flag coverage of the Rolex 24 at Daytona this past weekend, the season-opening race of the inaugural TUDOR United SportsCar Championship. The 2014 slate, which features 88 events from 37 venues, continues this week with live coverage of the fifth annual NASCAR Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Wednesday night, Jan. 29, starting at 7 p.m. (EST) with live streaming at MRN.com.
