Al Nabooda Racing Set Sights On Dubai Clincher In Porsche GT3 Cup Title Race

Clemens Schmid has warned rivals in the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East that Al Nabooda Racing will be going all out to strengthen their grip on the team title race when the series returns to action at Qatar’s Losail International Circuit tomorrow.

Defending individual champion Schmid says the objective for himself and Karim Al Azhari is to build on the 38-point championship lead they enjoy heading into Rounds 7 and 8 on Friday and Saturday and then clinch the team crown on home territory in Dubai next month.

“Karim and I haven’t spoken a lot about the weekend, but the plan is very simple,” said Schmid. ‘We want to extend our lead in the team championship, and ideally we’d like to score a one-two finish in both races to get maximum points.”

“It’s going to difficult, because the level of competition is so high now and the gap between most of the leading drivers is so narrow.

“But we know what we’re capable of and have a great team behind us so we’ll be looking to get the right results at Losail. The aim is to be in the position to make sure of the team title in Dubai next month.”

Both Schmid, who leads the drivers’ championship by 27 points, and Al Azhari, came under pressure during the previous race weekend at the Losail circuit a fortnight ago, but combined to put Al Nabooda Racing in a powerful position at the half way point in the season.

“The competition was tough and it was a difficult weekend for Karim and Clemens,” said Vijay Rao, Team Manager of Al Nabooda Racing. “In the first race everything went right for Clemens and he won well. But in the second race he made a few mistakes, and that’s something he doesn’t want to repeat this time.

“Karim had a difficult couple of races but he managed them well. He’s very professional in his approach and copes with any pressure that comes his way.

“Both want to do better this time to take Al Nabooda Racing closer to defending our team title, and they will be using some data from the last two rounds to adjust their driving styles to suit the Losail circuit more.”

From Qatar, the Porsche GT3 Cup series moves on to Dubai Autodrome for Rounds 9-10 on 14-15 February, with the 2013-14 season reaching its conclusion on 7-8 March at Bahrain International Circuit.
