Barton Mawer Targets 12-Hour Podium [Msn-O]

Barton Mawer was in contention for a class podium in last year’s Bathurst 12-hour until mechanical problems struck Rentcorp’s 2008 Porsche 997 GT3 Cup.

Barton Mawer has set himself the ambitious target of at least a Class B podium in next weekend’s Bathurst 12-Hour race.

Sydney-based Mawer, who will co-drive the Rentcorp Porsche 997 GT3 Cup with Duvashen Padayachee and Richard Muscat, believes it’s a realistic aim despite the once-around-the-clock enduro attracting its most competitive field ever.

“Last year was the Rentcorp team’s first attempt at the 12-Hour, and all things considered we put up a pretty good showing,” Mawer said.

“Our 2008 model 997 was within striking distance of the class leaders for much of the race.

“We were a podium possibility until mechanical problems struck mid-race.

“This year I’ll be co-driving with Duvashen and Richard Muscat in Duvashen’s 2011-spec 997, which is quicker than the 2008.

“Duvashen came on in leaps and bounds last year in his rookie Carrera Cup season, and Richard won the Porsche GT3 Challenge, so we’re a pretty strong team.

“Another factor in our favour is that the car is being prepared by Team BRM, which has a tremendous record in GT and openwheeler racing.”

Barton, who has contested several overseas GT endurance races in his varied racing career, acknowledged that this year’s Class B field is extremely strong.

“Even though the cars aren’t the latest models, there are plenty of top drivers,” he said.

“There’s a bunch of internationals, including the 2012 World Touring Car Champion, Rob Huff, and several current and former V8 Supercar drivers.

“The 12-Hour won’t be a picnic by any means, but with a clear run I’m confident that the #45 Rentcorp 997 has a good chance of scoring at least a podium result, if not the class win.”

Barton will have personal sponsorship in the Bathurst 12-Hour race from Dyno Dynamics.
