Bassmaster Elite Pro McClelland Kicks Off 2014 Season In Frigid Texas

Bassmaster Elite pro Mike McClelland will kick off his 2014 campaign at this weekend's Central Open #1 on Lake Amistad in South Texas, and after several days of practice, the Cabela's/GEICO For Your Boat-sponsored angler says dealing with the unusually cold weather will be key to success.

"I read all the reports out of the Southern division opener in Florida a few weeks ago, and as cold as it was for those guys I think we're in for an even colder start to the Central division schedule," McClelland said. "It's colder down here in Del Rio than it's been for many, many years. The locals I've talked say they can't even remember when it's been this cold for such an extended period of time. It's going to be a challenge.

"Bottom line, the fish just don't bite as much when it's cold, especially large-mouth bass. This lake is famous for it's large mouth and when it's good, it's very good. But this is not going to be a typical Amistad weekend. I doubt we'll get out of the 40s each day."

Although the conditions will make things tough on everyone in the field, McClelland, a native of Bella Vista, Ark., says his experience fishing in cooler weather throughout the Midwest should pay dividends.

"It's fishing the way I grew up, the way I've fished for most of my life," McClelland said. "You have to tough it out and really work to find the fish. This could be one of those tournaments where only a few people get full sacks (of five fish) every day, and the guys at the top of the leaderboard will most likely have that one big fish in there to get them weight.

"I just want to get my limits each day, and I think I'll be able to do that. I'll be working my Signature Series SPRO McSticks, using crank baits and spoons. I'll fish like I have in the colder climates. I'm not going to let myself get caught up in what Amistad should be producing and just take what it gives me instead."

McClelland will launch his Cabela's/GEICO For Your Boat Stratos at 7:30 a.m. on both Thursday and Friday from Diablo East Marina. Weigh-ins will take place each day at the same location beginning at 3:30 p.m. The top 12 anglers after Friday's action will advance to Saturday's final.
