British Star Kris Meeke Takes A Top-Ten Finish In Sub-Zero Rally Sweden

The Swedish round of the World Rally Championship (WRC) proved to be as dramatic and thrilling as ever this weekend, with British drivers challenging in the top ten as they battled through the Scandinavian landscapes.

British driver Kris Meeke, from Northern Ireland, and his co-driver Paul Nagle have finished tenth in his Rally Sweden debut, ending a challenging and promising weekend with a points-scoring result despite a spin on the final day seeing them stuck in a snow bank losing several minutes.

Rally Sweden has been the latest event which has shown a resurgence in British rally drivers, with Meeke posting 17 top-ten times during the event and Welsh driver Elfyn Evans and his co-driver Daniel Barritt coming tantalisingly close to finishing in ninth position before being forced to retire. The two British drivers battled through increasingly difficult conditions all weekend as the temperatures hovered just below freezing.

Kris Meeke was competing on snow for the very first time, impressively managing to run within the top-ten from the start to the end of the event. The Citroen Total Abu Dhabi driver battled through treacherous conditions on the final day which got the better of even the most experienced competitors, including World Champion Sebastian Ogier.

Fellow British driver Elfyn Evans persued the front runners all weekend before a disappointing crash in his M-Sport Ford Fiesta RS WRC on the very last stage ended his challenge early due to a damaged radiator.

Meeke and Evans are set to contest all 13 rounds of the 2014 WRC, culminating in the finale and only British round of the season, Wales Rally GB on 13 – 16 November 2014. Both drivers are already looking forward to competing in their home event and World Rally Passes are on sale now at www.walesrallygb.com.

Kris Meeke said: “I think I can be pleased with this first rally on snow. The only minor mistake we made proved very costly. If there had been spectators around, we would probably have only lost fifteen seconds or so. But we had to get the car out ourselves. However, the rest of the weekend went very well. We have learned a lot. The main thing for me is that we managed to get close to the leading guys. And finishing in the points is encouraging for the rest of the season.”

Elfyn Evans said: “We were achieving what we wanted from the event – improving the pace and on course for what would have been a good result for us – so it is really disappointing that it had to finish the way that it did. It was a good event in terms of gaining experience, so now we just need to take that forward and move onto the next one.”
