2014 NHRA: John Force Focused On Keeping Win Streak Alive At Carquest Auto Parts Nationals

For any professional driver, they say you’re only as good as your last race. For John Force, that’s a good thing to have as his Castrol GTX High Mileage Mustang Funny Car heads to CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals in Phoenix. By blasting both ends of the NHRA record books, qualifying number one and winning the season opener, John Force fired the opening salvo in what is shaping up to be dogfight for Funny Car supremacy this year.

With Pomona in the rear view mirror, John goes into Phoenix in first place with a 50 point lead over fellow competitor and arch rival Matt Hagan. With this season is still in its infancy, John is not on cruise control despite his domination at the NHRA Circle K Winternationals.

Force hasn’t won in the desert of Arizona since 2005 but he does have eight wins at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park. With his six final round appearances in a row (one short of his personal best finals streak) he has to be considered a favorite to win. He will face tough competition from Winternationals No. 2 qualifier teammate Robert Hight as well as teammate Courtney Force if he wants to equal his career personal best for consecutive finals; twice in 1996 Force raced to seven consecutive final rounds.

In the crowded media center at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, John Force sat down with reporters and reflected on his fresh victory. True to form, John Force had the standing room only crowd laughing, but there was one comment that really struck a nerve: “Everything’s going right and I just don’t get it,” said the 16-time NHRA Mello Yello champion.

Maybe it was karma or the planets in perfect alignment that led John Force to his 139th event win in Pomona earlier this month. Whatever is driving the good fortunes of this 64–year-old driver, he’s ready to keep the momentum going when he’ll get behind the wheel of his 10,000-horsepower Funny Car during the second stop of the 2014 NHRA Mello season.

Making sure the all those horses are hitting on all eight is the brain trust of crew chief Jimmy Prock and his right hand man Danny DeGennaro, along with the rest of the crew. Force knows he’ll once again have the car to beat during this weekend’s CARQUEST Auto Club NHRA Nationals. However, it takes more than mountains of horsepower to win races; it also takes concentration on John’s part to win rounds. “I need to focus on this car. This is a critical year, probably the most critical since my accident. That was about me not being able to drive. This is about somebody putting a value on me. It doesn’t matter how much someone loves you, it is about where he is going. This old race car will do the running and all I have to do is stay in the gym.”

Rest assured, John’s amped up for nothing less than victory at this weekend’s CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals as he marches towards his 17th NHRA Funny Car Championship. With nitro running through his veins, John will stop at nothing until he achieves that milestone.
