2014 NHRA: Brogdon Hopes For Big Weekend From Protecttheharvest.Com Camaro

Rodger Brogdon is looking for big things from his ProtectTheHarvest.com Pro Stock team in 2014, and the Carquest Auto Parts NHRA Nationals this weekend at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park could be a sign of things to come.

Brogdon qualified No. 9 at the season-opener in Pomona, Calif., and though he lost in the first round there, he sees plenty of potential in his Chevrolet Camaro.

"We're happy with the start to the season," Brogdon said. "We haven't made what we call a decent run, but we still went 6.541 in Pomona. The round I lost to Jeggie (Jeg Coughlin Jr.), I was going to go a low .54 or even a high .53, so it's real promising."

Putting together a good run in Pro Stock can be a Herculean task, as the myriad of pieces and systems on a race car have to all work in concert. It starts with good horsepower, and Brogdon knows he has plenty of that this season. Now, it's up to crew chiefs Jeff Perley and Pete Smallwood to harness it.

"We're going to do better this coming weekend," Brogdon said. "We're comfortable in Phoenix and should be fine. I think if we make some decent runs, we'll qualify in the top six. We've got enough power now to qualify up there, but we've got to make better runs."

Brogdon has fond memories of Phoenix, the site where he scored his first national event victory in 2005 in Comp.

"I've had some good luck in Phoenix. I always like going there," Brogdon said. "I won my first national meet ever right there in my Competition Eliminator days. I qualified on the pole, won the race, and outran the best driver in the history of NHRA Comp racing, David Rampy, in the final. It doesn't get much better than that."

Qualifying sessions at the Carquest Auto Parts NHRA Nationals will be held at 2 and 4:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Eliminations kick off at 11 a.m., Sunday. ESPN2 will air qualifying and elimination action.
