Innovation Comes To The NASCAR Nation With New 3M Mobile Innovation Center

The cars running in the Daytona 500 won’t be the only vehicles at the track showcasing technology, innovation and advanced engineering. And while these cars will each feature nearly 85 3M product solutions hard at work, this represents only a portion of the 3M technology shown in the new 3M Mobile Innovation Center, which opens outside of turn three just in time for the race weekend.

The 3M Mobile Innovation Center, located in the Fan Midway, showcases how 3M technology, innovation and products benefit users in their home, life and company. The four displays feature Microreplication Technology, Film Technology, NonWoven Technology and Adhesive Technology. Sounds like science class, right?

At right, Doug Rice, president of PRN, interviews Jack Roush and Greg Biffle at the 3M Mobile Innovation Center.

But when you consider that these four technologies allow you to wrap a race car with a cool design or see a street sign at night; keep your furnace running smoothly or scour the stains in your sink; protect your vehicle’s paint from chips and keep the sun’s glare from your living room; or write notes and hang photos, then you can see how you interact with 3M technology at every turn.

"They say you are always within a few feet of a 3M product," said Greg Biffle, driver of the No. 16 3M Ford Fusion. "When you consider you have your cell phone, your car, your briefcase, even a filling in your mouth -- there are 3M products in all of those. It's amazing to see their technology at work, not just in our race cars and in the race shop but in our daily lives."

The team at 3M constantly looks at how 3M technology advances every company, how 3M products enhance every home and 3M innovation improves every life. The goal of 3M innovation is to connect ideas across 46 diverse technologies for new solutions and systems. The new 3M Mobile Innovation Center brings this concept to life in an entertaining, educational manner for the race fans and intellectually curious. With real-life examples of technology at work, demonstrations, hands-on experiments and even giveaways, the 3M Mobile Innovation Center is a “must-see” attraction on the midway.

“If you’ve ever dreamed of inventing a product, the 3M Mobile Innovation Center brings that process to life,” said David Trudell, communications manager for the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, Minn. “Want to see how a breakthrough product creates an entirely new market? Explore how a unique approach meets untapped needs? Even look at how streamlined businesses processes improve company performance? You can see all that and more in the 3M Mobile Innovation Center.”
The four key technologies showcased in the 3M Mobile Innovation Center include:

Adhesive Technology
3M invented pressure-sensitive adhesives technology, which was initially launched in 1925. Pressure-sensitive adhesives are notably used in the family of 3M Scotch® Brand Tapes, which debuted more than 85 years ago for automotive masking tape. Today the Scotch® Brand family of tapes has extended far and wide to include more than 1,000 different tape products used in our everyday lives in the home, the office, and manufacturing.

3M adhesives are engineered to fit our customers’ needs. They are used in such diverse products as automobiles, airplanes, cell phones, dental products and medical dressings. Adhesive technology items in the 3M Mobile Innovation Center:
• 3M™ VHB™ Structural bond adhesive used in buildings, trailers and aircraft
• Post-it® Brand notes
• Command™ Strips and Hooks
• 3M™ Wheel Weights
• 3M™ Damping Foil for sound reduction
• Scotch® Super 33+™ Vinyl Electrical Tape

Microreplication Technology
Microreplication is the process for forming ultra-precise, predetermined, three dimensional microscopic structures onto a variety of substrates using a mold. These microstructures alter the physical, chemical and optical properties of the substrates, leading to new and useful products. Microreplication technology items in the 3M Mobile Innovation Center:

• 3M™ Gripping Material for gloves and wrapping handles and tools
• 3M™ Privacy Screen filters for computers and hand held devices
• 3M™Controltac™ graphic film with Comply™ adhesive used for wrapping NASCAR race cars as well as trains, buses and trucks with custom graphics.
• 3M™Dual-Lock™ used for attachment
• 3M™Diamond Grade™ reflective material used for street signs

Nonwoven Technology
3M has explored new ways to use nonwoven materials for over 60 years. From medical tapes to abrasives they improve durability and ease-of-use. As insulators they make vehicles and boats quieter and clothes warmer. With 3M’s expertise in advanced materials and sophisticated manufacturing technologies, new opportunities are being developed in health care, consumer products and heavy industry. NonWoven technology items in the 3M Mobile Innovation Center:
• Filtrete™ Furnace Filter
• Scotch-Brite™ brand abrasive materials for industrial use
• Scotch-Brite™ brand pads and sponges for consumer use
• 3M™ Respirators and Masks
• 3M™Thinsulate™ insulating products

Film Technology
3M’s engineered films serve a vast multitude of uses. One product line enhances the brightness in LCD displays, while another blocks the sun’s harmful rays from coming through windows. 3M films are used to create large graphics and to prevent graffiti. Some are single-layered and other combine hundreds of layers that are tuned to transmit or reflect specific wavelengths. Still other films provide barriers to oxygen and moisture- a requirement for next-generation electronic displays. Film technology items in the 3M Mobile Innovation Center:

• 3M™Prestige Series Sun Control Window film
• 3M™Scotchgard™ Paint Protection Film for automobiles
• Air-Guide with 3M™ Vikuiti™ Enhanced Specular Reflector (ESR) film for electronic displays and auto brake lights
• 3M™ Safety and Security Window Films

The 3M Mobile Innovation Center will be on display at 11 NASCAR events during the season, including
Daytona (February), Texas (April), Richmond (April), Talladega (May), Kentucky (June), Bristol (August), Chicago (September), Dover (September), Kansas (October), Charlotte (October) and Phoenix (November).

In addition, the 3M Mobile Innovation Center will travel to trade shows, industry events, businesses and universities. For more information, visit www.3M.com/Innovation.
