Walker In Thick Of Championship Battle After Day 1 Of GEICO Bassmaster Classic

Cabela's/GEICO For Your Boat pro David Walker attacked Lake Guntersville during opening day action at the 44th annual GEICO Bassmaster Classic and came away from the sport's biggest tournament a lofty third in the championship standings. Walker, of Sevierville, Tenn., caught a full limit of five bass weighing 24 pounds, 13 ounces.

"It's a three-day tournament, we need to remember that," Walker said. "You watch a horse race and you see those few horses that get out front on the first or second turn and you think they got it sewn up, but we all know that's not always the case.

"I just want to be in the mix. I want to be up there where I have a real chance. I think we are at this point. This year's Classic really suites my style, and I want to do well here more than anything. I'm happy to be in this position. You always want more, but I'm pretty pleased with this start. Considering the weather we had and what it did to the water, I'm probably better off than I should be."

An overnight storm left the waters of Lake Guntersville a little cloudy Friday, something many anglers mentioned at the official weigh-in at Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex. Nevertheless, Walker caught a total of 12 fish weighing an estimated 39 pounds, 12 ounces, which he culled down to his official Day 1 weight.

"I really had to fine-tune my spots," Walker said. "It seemed like in practice I had a broader range, but today it got very specific and it was easy to overlook the fish if you weren't careful. Once I figured out what to look for, I started catching them.

"The puzzling thing about fishing is you'd think that if you just get a lure around them they'll grab it, but that's really not the case. Every day these fish want something different, and not just a different color or action but maybe movement or direction. It's a mystery to me why they don't just eat what's available but they just don't. Of course, that's what's so great about this sport. It's a Rubik's Cube and unless you line everything up just right, these fish will make you look stupid."

Walker plans to stick to his pre-tournament plan for the most part as action shifts to Saturday, although he's keeping his options open.

"I don't want to get myself too specific and regiment the day because I feel like with the weather and the conditions I need to keep my plan of attack a little more fluid," Walker said. "I hope we stay on them. I've been dreaming about this tournament since it was announced, and I've been so close before in past Classics (third place on two occasions). I want to break through. I'm ready."

Saturday's launch begins at 7:15 a.m. at City Harbor in Guntersville, Ala. Weigh-in will once again take place beginning at 3 p.m. at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex in downtown Birmingham.
