2014 NHRA: Spencer Massey NHRA Nationals at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park Qualifying Report: No. 11

A year ago, Ron and his NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger R/T team led by crew chief Rahn Tobler provided the perfect celebratory atmosphere on Sunday when they won the Funny Car title for the third time at the track.

And that's their plans for this Sunday with another huge contingent of NAPA fans along with former baseball flamethrower Randy Johnson, who was in Ron's pits Saturday, and former Phoenix Suns NBA all-star Dan Majerle, who is expected to be his guest Sunday.

"Dan came out here last year and of course Randy Johnson has been here all weekend and he's hooked," Ron said. "If you go to Randy's website (rj51photos.com) you can see some great photos of our NAPA car that he took. It's great when you have those kinds of people come out and then they tell everybody how great the sport of drag racing is. And that you have to be here to see it and feel it live."

Ron, who owns 41 NHRA event titles, produced a time of 4.079 in Saturday's opening session to qualify ninth for Sunday's championship eliminations, which begin at 11 a.m. (MST).

"We're returning champions and we just have to try and defend our crown tomorrow. I have confidence wherever we go. When you race for a guy like Rahn Tobler, with our team and you have Don Schumacher and our sponsors, there's no reason why you can't win wherever you go.

"There aren't a lot of drivers who can say that. It surely gives me a lot more confidence and it makes me work harder."
