Despite Down Day, Walker Makes Cut At Angling's Biggest Event Of The Year

Colder water temperatures Saturday at Lake Guntersville certainly cooled off Cabela's/GEICO For Your Boat pro angler David Walker, but the 15-year veteran fought his way through to the final day of the 44th annual GEICO Bassmaster Classic.

Walker turned in a four-fish bag weighing 9 pounds, 6 ounces after a "brutal day" on the lake, which pushed his total weight for the prestigious tournament to 34 pounds, 3 ounces. He ended up 24th, just above the cutline for the 25 pros who qualify for Sunday's final round of action.

"As good as Friday was for me, Saturday was that bad," Walker said. "I feel fortunate to make the cut, and that's a disappointment considering we were way up there (in third place) yesterday. We started so well and had all the pieces in place and then I turn right around and just scatter those pieces on the floor.

"The Classic is the tournament we all point to throughout the year. You want to qualify for it first and foremost because it's hard just to get in this deal, and then you get here and realize it's time to reach for the top. To not perform at your best is just such a bummer, and I really have no one to blame but myself."

According to BASSTrakk, most of the anglers in the tournament took a while to get going as the slumbering fish seemed to wait for water temperatures to warm up a bit before the bite began. Even then, Walker didn't record a fish until a few hours into the day.

"For whatever reason, I just couldn't put it together today," he said. "I could come up with a thousand different reasons why but the buck stops here. I'm the reason I'm in this position.

"I definitely went after a big stringer, and I kept trying everything I could to make that happen. This result today is not for lack of effort; it just didn't happen for me. This is how fishing is at times; I just wish it hadn't happened to me here."

The Day 2 tally shows Walker 13 pounds, 3 ounces off the lead. It's a number he could overcome if his luck shades more to the good side, as it was on Friday.

"The best way to get past a bad day of fishing is to go out and have a good one," Walker said. "Making the cut was critical because I now have a chance to redeem myself. I didn't want to carry a nine-pound stringer on my back for a year, and hopefully now I won't have to. We'll get some sleep, reenergize, and get after it tomorrow.

"The biggest issue that haunts you is that you can't make up for a bad Classic the next weekend because it only comes once a year, and that's only if you manage to qualify for it again. It's such an all-or-nothing deal. Hopefully, we'll rebound tomorrow and the smiles will come back."

Sunday's launch begins at 7:15 a.m. at City Harbor in Guntersville, Ala. Weigh-in will once again take place beginning at 3 p.m. at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex in downtown Birmingham.
