Walker Rebounds To Finish A Strong 19th At Geico Bassmaster Classic

David Walker experienced the gamut of emotions at the 44th annual GEICO Bassmaster Classic this weekend on Lake Guntersville, but the Cabela's/GEICO For Your Boat pro angler finished on a high note.

Walker bounced back from a difficult day on the water Saturday to bag five fish weighing 16 pounds, 15 ounces and finish in 19th place Sunday in one of the world's most prestigious fishing tournaments.

"A much better day today," said Walker, who made the 25-angler cut Saturday. "Gosh, you have days like yesterday and you are so low you almost want to quit. Then you have days like Friday and today and it restores your love for the sport.

"It's hard, plain and simple, but that's why we love it. The challenge is extreme."

Walker was in third place after Friday's first day of the Classic but then struggled Saturday with only 9 pounds, 6 ounces. He rebounded on the final day and carries some momentum into the Bassmaster Elite Series competition.

"I'm so glad I made the cut and had a chance to rebound today," Walker said during the weigh-in at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex in downtown Birmingham. "I didn't want to carry that bad day with me for an entire year until the Classic rolls around again.

"Naturally, we wanted more, especially here. I really felt this was a great place for me. The thing is when you have multiple-day tournaments, you have to be on point all three days."

Only three anglers, for example, hauled in more than 18 pounds each day, and they all finished in the top four.

"You can't have a bad day because you can't recover," Walker said. "I had a good finish, and that's exciting. It could have been even better, but I lost what looked to be a 6-pounder early on today.

"Still, when you have a good day on the water it leaves you so anxious to get back out there again."

Walker will compete in the Southern Open, March 6-8, on Smith Lake in Jasper, Ala., before returning to the Elite Series, March 13-16, on Lake Seminole in Bainbridge, Ga.
