Dunlop 24H DUBAI: Gearing up for the tenth anniversary

Barely two months after this year’s successful ninth running of the Dunlop 24H DUBAI, the opening round of the 2014 24H SERIES powered by Dunlop, Dutch agency CREVENTIC is already looking forward to next year. From January 8 till 10, 2015, Dubai Autodrome will be the venue for the tenth anniversary of the first international endurance race of the new calendar year for GTs, touring cars and 24H Specials. To commemorate this occasion, next year’s race will be a special affair. “It looks like many teams want to be part of the celebrations, because we have received more preliminary entries for next year than ever before at this time of the year,” says Gerrie Willems on behalf of CREVENTIC. “When it continues at this pace, we will have a capacity grid by this summer already!”

Dutch entrepreneur Ivo Breukers, who competed in endurance races at club racing level at the time, first visited Dubai Autodrome in 2005 and immediately saw the potential of organising a 24-hour race there. He convinced his racing partner, Gerrie Willems, to join him and that is how CREVENTIC started. Soon, the two got the experienced team of Dutch organisation DNRT with instructor and former racing driver Huub Vermeulen as its chairman on board and in co-operation with Dubai Autodrome, the inaugural 24-hour race in the United Arab Emirates was held in January, 2006. “It was our first race as promoters and organisers and staging an event so far away from home was a huge challenge, but it all worked out,” Gerrie Willems recalls. “Participants were enthusiastic and the race quickly developed to what it has become now, one of the classic 24-hour races, an international event where professionals, semi-pros and amateur drivers can race together and the race with the most international field of drivers and teams. Over the years, partnership with DNRT has always been excellent and we also got the commitment from Dunlop as our title sponsor and exclusive tyre partner.”

Existing class structure remains unchanged

With 27 lead changes featuring eight different teams during this year’s Dunlop 24H DUBAI, the race brought plenty of action. For next year, the existing class structures for GTs, touring cars and 24H Specials will remain unchanged. “We don’t expect any major changes in the regulations either, but some developments might be added to enhance competition and pleasure for the drivers,” Gerrie Willems explains. “We are proud that we have been able to maintain the character of our race over the years, together with a good mix of various cars, from impressive and powerful GT3 machines to the compact touring cars in the A2 and diesel classes.”

The expert commentary team from Radiolemans.com has already committed to being on board again for the Dunlop 24H DUBAI in 2015. “We will have increased live television coverage, too,” Gerrie Willems says. “Moreover, our partners from Dubai Autodrome will also contribute to making next year’s tenth anniversary of our race a special event. This year, we already had a very colourful parade with artists on the starting grid and I am sure that we will get to see something special for next year, too. Once again, we are expecting teams from over 40 countries. Everything will be set to make it a great event to start the 2015 season of our 24H SERIES powered by Dunlop!”
